About this house rental

A 1930s brick Tudor cottage set back on a wooded lot in SW Durham -- stone chimney, arched entry, hardwood floors throughout. Three bedrooms including a private first-floor king suite. Ten minutes to Duke Hospital, Duke West Campus, and downtown Durham. Little Waves Coffee in the kitchen. Fillaree toiletries in the bath. The kind of house that feels like it has been waiting for you.

Your hosts at Delighted Properties are local to Durham and available if anything comes up during your stay. We’re happy to provide recommendations for restaurants, coffee shops, breweries, trails, and local favorites throughout the Bull City. Please feel free to reach out via the messaging app or by phone if you have any questions or need recommendations.

The Duke Forest neighborhood occupies the wedge of Durham between Duke's West Campus and the 15-501 corridor. Streets are quiet and canopied. This lot sits deep on a wooded acre -- dozens of dogwood trees and azalea bushes frame the brick walk in spring, and the stone chimney rises above the canopy in every season.

Coffee. Little Waves Coffee stocked in the kitchen. Namu Coffee (3604 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd) is the closest local cafe -- 1.4 miles, worth the drive for the low-key, wooded ambience.

Restaurants and bars. Foster's Market (2694 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd, 0.6 miles) for the best breakfast and lunch in the neighborhood -- scratch soups, biscuits, and peanut butter pie on a cottage patio. Saltbox Seafood Joint (2637 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd, 0.6 miles) for James Beard Award-winning NC seafood. Fairview Dining Room at the Washington Duke Inn (3001 Cameron Blvd, 1.5 miles) for a special dinner -- AAA Four Diamond, live piano on weekends.

Landmark. The Washington Duke Inn and Al Buehler Trail sit 1.5 miles away -- a 3.5-mile paved loop through the Duke Forest canopy, popular with the Duke Health and university community year-round. Duke Forest trail access begins within a few blocks of the house. The Duke University campus -- Gothic architecture, Sarah P. Duke Gardens, Cameron Indoor Stadium, Duke Chapel -- is a 7-minute drive.

The house is where Durham families stay for graduation weekend, where researchers settle in for a semester, and where medical families land when someone they love is at Duke Health.

You’ll have the entire home and property to yourself, including off-street parking for up to 3 cars. Please note that the driveway is shared with the home behind, so we ask that you park courteously so as not to block them in!

The Stone Arch House is a 1930s brick Tudor cottage set on a deep, wooded lot in Durham's Duke Forest neighborhood. Dozens of dogwood trees and azalea bushes frame the home in spring. The ivy-covered stone chimney rises above the canopy in every season. Inside, hardwood floors run through every room. An original fireplace anchors the living room. An arched interior doorway connects the main rooms. A built-in pine phone nook frames the first-floor hallway.

Living room
Generous seating, the original fireplace, and direct sight lines to the dining room through the original arched pass-through. TV mounted above the fireplace mantle. The arched interior doorway -- a detail guests consistently photograph and remember.

Kitchen
Fully equipped with electric range, oven, dishwasher, refrigerator, blender, coffee maker. Stocked with cooking basics. Kitchen bar table works well for morning coffee before exploring the Bull City.

Dining room
Six-seat dining table with chandelier and natural light. Room for a full family dinner.

First-floor primary suite
King bed, private and quiet on the ground floor. Full bath with shower on the first floor. Room-darkening shades. This room works well for guests who need a ground-floor bedroom -- no stairs.

Upstairs bedrooms
King bedroom and queen bedroom, both with hardwood floors and room-darkening shades. Built-in pine cabinetry fills full walls in each room. The full upstairs bath has a bathtub with shower.

Workspace
Dedicated workspace with desk and reliable high-speed WiFi in the upstairs King room. Quiet enough for video calls.

Outdoor space
A private back patio surrounded by mature trees and garden. Charcoal grill on the covered back patio. Outdoor dining for eight. The patio is best in the morning before the day starts, and at dusk.

Practical details
In-unit washer and dryer. Pack-n-Play available. Three-car driveway parking on premises -- no street parking is available.

Honestly it was a beautiful spot. The house was way more than we needed but it was perfect. Clean, comfy and well equipped. The owner made himself available if we needed anything. We did not. Would stay again if needed.

The only negative aspect of the stay was that the keyless lock and entrance door did not work. It took numerous text exchanges and attempts before we could get the door open. (Caused us to be late to an event.) Otherwise, everything was excellent: pre-communication; convenience of location to Duke and UNC; cleanliness of home; necessary amenities, etc. Great value. I would stay here again … once the door is fixed. :)
