About this farm stay rental

We have just upgraded this lovely holiday home by adding reversible warm air heating/air conditioning in addition to the wood burning stove. We have also added a TV for those long winter evenings. The gite is in a wonderful location with great views, very quiet and ideal for chilling out, walking and birdwatching. It is great for Autumn, Winter and early Spring holidays as it has double glazing, a wood burning stove that keeps the whole house warm and cosy. and reversible warm air/air conditioning system. It is only 30 mins away from the F1 circuit and 18 hole golf course of Magny-Cours. We have converted this gite from part of a barn, retaining all the original features and as far as possible using traditional materials. It is set in 2 hectares (5 acres) of meadow with only the owners on the same site. The owners’ house is on the opposite side of the large courtyard making the gite very secluded and private. Access is from a lane leading off a quiet road and you can walk for miles without having to do more than cross a metaled road. The accommodation comprises a large open plan living room of 50m2 with corner kitchen, and a huge bedroom of 48m2 with en-suite bathroom.
There is WiFi, a large selection of board games, library, petanque, table tennis table, a Canadian type canoe, 2 ponds with frogs, newts, fish, and water lilies, 180 metre golf practise range. You can bring your own clubs and balls, or we can provide them.
We do all the cleaning ourselves and take pride in doing a thorough job including the sanitizing of surfaces you are likey to touch during the Covid 19 crisis.
There is a cleaning charge of 40€ and a refundable deposit of 50€ both payable in cash on arrival. We also charge for electricity used at cost, but this rarely amounts to more than 10-12 euros per week, and for the wood for the insert wood burner should you need it. The gaz used for cooking is free of charge.

Very comfortably furnished with a lot of personal touches and attention to detail. Kitchen extremely well equipped. Lovely grounds and gardens - a pond with waterlilies such a pleasure in comparison with an ugly swimming-pool. Flowers everywhere outside and in every room. Delightful.

A superb self-contained conversion of part of a rural barn set in a huge garden in mid-France. We had the ultimate week of relaxation in this rural idyll. The owners, Adrian and Shamsiah, live on the site, but their house is well separated from the Gite, and they don't interfere in any way - whilst being delighted to help, and really informative, with queries about the locality. The only noise at night is from the pond, which is absolutely full of vocal green frogs. We also had a superb day canoeing down the Allier; just one direction, because Adrian came to collect us and the canoe from a village many miles downstream.

This well equipped gite is situated in a quiet corner of deepest rural France. As a barn conversion it provides very spacious generous accommodation and lovely gardens to stroll around and sit in late into the night watching the stars appear in a coal-black sky, uncorrupted by light pollution. Hosts Adrian and Shamsiah are attentive and helpful without being intrusive, they manage to get the balance just right. The beautiful medieval villages and towns, the intriguing history of the region and the proximity of rivers and volcanic landscape (a day out to Puy de Dômes is a must) make this undiscovered area a gem awaiting the wave of commercialisation that tourism will, one day, surely bring. Paddle down the Allier in the C2 canoe to Apremont, it's well worth it! The only criticism I would make is nothing to do with the gite. If you're an angler and you read the tourist rhetoric, you'll think that this area is great for fishing- it's not! Most of the lakes are private and the Allier is very hard fishing. Fly fishing on the Sioule is the best option in the South of the region. If you like your French experience unsullied, calm, traditional and tranquil, this gite is for you!

France is a long way from our home in Australia. We dreamed of leisurely touring the French country-side, visiting small villages, markets and historic places, while living in an old cottage in a tranquil setting. This cottage delivered all of this and more. Located on a beautiful small farm the old cottage (converted barn) was a treasured home for a week, from which we daily roamed and explored this beautiful region. The accommodations were all we imagined and our hosts quickly became friends, offering a welcome tourist service and as much as they could possibly do to help us fulfill the dream.

Seeing is really believing with this property! The photos do not do it justice. Large, airy rooms, with high, beamed ceilings full of everything you could possibly need. All spotless, top quality furnishings, bedding, kitchen appliances and utensils etc. Outside, a choice of seating areas for meals/ relaxing in a most beautiful garden, which is private, huge and pretty, including a pond full of delightfully musical frogs!! Wildlife all around to enjoy, bikes to ride, and a canoe trip beyond compare. Plenty of interesting and photogenic places to visit nearby, and handy shops, banks and petrol stations. We cannot recommend this property and it's wonderful owners highly enough. We are booking for next year!!! Look out lovely Adrian and Shamsiah, - we're coming back!

After reading the description of this property prior to booking, I was expecting somewhere a little bit special, set in a quiet and peaceful location - and I was not disappointed in any way. In fact, if anything, I believe the description is a little understated! Right from the start of the booking, the owners Adrian and Shamsiah were more than helpful - providing detailed directions from the main French ferry terminals, which was a good job as the property is off the main road up a very small lane that would be very easy to miss. There is a refundable deposit, as well as a reasonable cleaning charge - which means you don't have to worry excessively about cleaning the property at the end of your stay. On arrival, Adrian and Shamsiah were friendly and helpful, giving me tips on places to go and things to do. A bonus for me was the range of bicycles they have available for you to use at no extra charge. The property itself was very clean and tidy, well appointed and spacious comprising of an ample kitchen, dining and lounge area whilst the bedroom on the first floor was

Our week's holiday was very relaxing and enjoyable. Adrian and Shamsiah were perfect hosts. They have put a huge amount of effort into making sure that the cottage is homely and very well maintained with everything you need. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and offers some wonderful walking routes. We wouldn't hesitate to return.

We really had an enormously lovely time, the location is marvellous, Adrian & Shamsiah became friends rather than landlord/lady. It is excellent value & extremely spacious, the kitchen is very well equipped and you have your own corner of lovely tranquility to wander around too. There is either lots to do or nothing at all, each equally enjoyable. Our highlights included the river trip which shouldn't be missed, the frogs & fish, the patio (with grill) at night & the occasional visit from the local inquisitive cows. We shall certainly return. Highly recommended.

We had the most wonderful and relaxing stay in rural Allier. The cottage was beautiful, spacious and so comfortable, clean and charmingly decorated. Our hosts, Adrian and Shamsiah, were so welcoming and ready to advise on any aspect of our stay. Heaven is a slow lazy morning enjoying the peace of the patio and garden, a gentle cycle ride (bikes included) to a recommended local farmhouse restaurant (superb food) then an afternoon cycling around the area on quiet lanes where meeting a car is an unusual event. Alternatively let Adrian take you down to the river Allier where you can drift down the river and picnic on the banks in complete tranquility watching the kingfishers fly by. It should be possible to prescribe a week at Les Houllins on the NHS - no better way to relieve stress!

Quiet, peaceful location - just what we were looking for! Owners were lovely - so helpful and approachable. Photographs on website do not do this property justice - it's nicer than photographs. We went on holiday looking for peace and tranquility and that's exactly what we found. The gite is in a beautifully un disturbed area of rural France and it was an absolute treat to relax to the evening choir of frogs and crickets! The gite is well equipped and homely and the log fire is a great part of the evening ambience. Adrian and Shamsiah were both attentive and gracious and the local knowledge they offered was invaluable when we were deciding on the days activities. The pace of life, lack of traffic, clean air and sunshine helped to make this idyll a real memory maker .... So much so that we had booked for next year before we left!!!!

The house and grounds are exactly as described, comfortable, utterly peaceful (no traffic, dogs barking, church bells ringing, etc), and this is the best equipped gite we've ever stayed in. During a week of chilly evenings, we were glad of the woodburner, which is superb, and Adrian kept us generously supplied with wood. He and Shamsiah are the ideal hosts, friendly, welcoming, and with a wealth of suggestions for places to visit etc, should you need ideas. Knowing we enjoy walking, they provided a new detailed map, with a variety of detailed books and leaflets on local walks. There are numerous walks from the house, as long or short as you choose, and all on tracks and paths which are easy to follow, through beautiful scenery, where you'll meet noone, but see masses of flowers, birds (the storks are a special treat!). We enjoyed Le Chuchal, a local rural auberge, rightly famed for its food - an excellent 4 course menu du jour for only 14 Euros, including wine, one of numerous good restaurants in the area. We took advantage of the option of to canoe on the Allier river, and saw no other people during the 20 km trip to Apremont, but passed storks, nesting high in the trees, numerous groups of dozens of bee eaters flocking above their nesting sites in the river banks, and numerous other birds - a birdwatcher's dream. If you want to visit places, there are lots, if you want peace and quiet there is plenty, and besides providing ideal accommodation, Adrian and Shamsiah will give any help you need to make your stay enjoyable and memorable - highly recommended!

We enjoyed 2 weeks at Les Houllins , Adrian and Shamsiah being friendly and informative host's without being the least bit intrusive. The Gite is well equipped, comfortable and spacious in the French style, the countryside is rolling, pastoral and attractive. We had plenty to do and Nevers , Puy de Dome, Moulins and Appremont are all great days out, together with closer attractions like Bourbon and swimming at the Etang de Pirot with a sandy beach and plenty of shade (it hit 37c in the first week) Plenty of places for a good lunch with avg for a plat de jour at around 13 euro, some including wine. Try Le Cherchal, L' Auberge des Ormes or for a step back in time the Grand Caf? in Moulins with an interior dating from 1895. If you visit Appremont the gardens are stunning and instead of eating in the village pop up the road to Gimouille and try the Grenouille at the cross roads and also see the aqueduct where the canal crosses the Allier and boats dropping down the 3 locks. Alternatively just chill out in the garden, feed the fish in the pond , watch out for the Kingfishers and local deer and when darkness descends just gaze at the stars , no light pollution so a great view.

We would highly recommend this gite on several counts. The gite itself is superb, wonderfully converted from part of the original barn. It is spacious and is set in wonderful grounds which are most enjoyable in themselves, in terms of the flowers, wildlife and walks. Great place to relax and watch the world go by. The owners live in the farm house on site. They have the right balance of helpfulness, but not intrusion and have an excellent knowledge of the local area and all things Auvergne in the locale. They are truly excellent hosts. Lastly, the area is very peaceful, idyllic rural France. The driving is probably the easiest I have experienced abroad. There is still much to see, towns, chateaux, markets, walks all within a rush hour of three cars. A must is the canoe trip, with compulsory picnic and the wonderful gardens at Apremont at the other end.

We found "Les Houllins" easily, the directions supplied were clear & concise. Shamsiah and Adrian met us, walked us around the house and the lovely gardens and provided all the information we needed. The house is situated in beautiful grounds, the surrounding countryside is gentle on the eye and ear, the most insistent noise is the call of the woodpecker! Sitting on the terrace sipping a glass of chilled wine as the early evening sun slides down the sky, it was very easy to unwind and relax. It was ideal for us, after sixteen weeks of driving around Europe. We ate at several of the restaurants that Adrian recommended and each one was excellent but "Le Chuchal" was the standout. The house was very well-equipped and the bed very comfortable, all in all, a real home from home. If you are looking for peace and quiet in a lovely corner of France, you will not do better than this.

My wife and I stayed for three weeks with Adrian and Shamsiah and had a wonderful relaxed and peaceful holiday. The accommodation and location were excellent and we were well looked after by the owners. For those wanting a peaceful location with abundant walks locally this is the place!! The local restaurant recommended is definitely not to be missed as we so nearly did!

Les Houllins was a spacious, well maintained & well-equipped cottage, situated in 5 acres of land comprising pond, golf range & gardens, affording peace & privacy yet close enough to the owners should any problem arise. Both the living area & bedroom were spacious & very comfortable. The bathroom area was beautifully decorated, but in our opinion would benefit from a walk-in shower. There are many local places of interest to visit, each with its own charm & attraction. Le Chuchal restaurant at Franchesse was marvellous for both lunchtime & evening meals. Our first experience of a g?te is likely to be our last - simply because we can?t imagine ever finding one that suited our requirements better than Les Houllins and the welcome from Adrian and Shamsiah. After a physically and mentally demanding year, all we wanted was peace and quiet and total relaxation, somewhere non-touristy in France, probably in the Auvergne. Internet research led us to two or three possibles, of which Les Houllins was the clear leader. Everything about the description sounded right up our street, and the reality lived up to the promise. Hostly recommendations, especially for dining out, were much appreciated and duly followed up. A request for ?somewhere nearby? on the evening of our arrival took us to the Pont Neuf in Le Veudre for our first meal out, reasonably priced and good food. The Hotel Montespan in Bourbon l?Archembault gave us a superb meal for our next outing (starvation diet the following day!); and we were staggered by the enormous and ancient tilleul (lime tree) at the back of their garden, which was planted by the monks in 1529, so is approaching its 500th birthday. A reference in the Visitors? Book took us to Apremont-sur-Allier, an enchantingly pretty village further down-river (north of Le Veudre); the excellent Brasserie du Lavoir, has a lunch-time menu at 20 euros; sitting in the shade of a big umbrella, throwing bits of stale bread to the ever-present sparrows, and being fed like kings left us with smug smiles, full tummies and a serious need for a siesta. After sitting under the magnificent tree (which came into flower during our visit and smelled divine) near our back door for several days on end, equipped with reading material and tea/coffee/beer/tonic/coke (insert as appropriate for the time of day), we began to suspect that Adrian and Shamsiah might think we were being unduly lazy. But this was the perfection of our visit, that there was absolutely no pressure to go and do anything beyond a gentle dead-heading of the roses and petunias, and feeding bread to the fish in the pond. After ten days or so, we were beginning to feel more like human beings, and were reluctant to leave at the end of our fortnight. The final and crowning touch was provided by Le Chuchal, strongly recommended by Adrian and Shamsiah, but closed during the first week of our stay. Hoping that we were keeping the best till last, we booked for our final evening. Suffice it to say that we were in no way disappointed.
