About this cottage rental

This fairy-tale cottage is situated in one of the loveliest villages along the famous Route des Chaumieres (Thatched Cottage Route). It is located in Eure, near the border with Calvados and Seine-Maritime. The cottage has four bedrooms and can sleep up to 8 people. There is a garden of about an acre running from the cottage down to the banks of the Seine River. The village is within the Boucles de la Seine national park, and there are cycling and hiking trails along the river and into the forests from the doorstep. Less than an hour to Honfleur, Deauville, Etretat, Le Havre and Rouen, the pebble beaches of the Alabaster Coast and the sandy beaches of the Cote Fleurie. A perfect base for walking, cycling, golf, horseback riding, and exploring Norman history, culture and gastronomic delights.

and beautiful location. Everything we could need for a wonderful family break.

Les Iris is a very beautiful, traditional house. We were warmly welcomed by Christine on arrival, the house was clean and well equipped, with a delightful garden sloping down towards the village 'green' and the river. There is ample seating to eat outside when the weather allows. A car is a must as there aren't any facilities within walking distance of the house. The village itself is charming, with mostly thatched 'chaumieres', it would benefit from a bar or taverne or cafe or basic shop, but other than that the location is ideal to travel around that area of Normandy, with easy driving distances to places like Honfleur, Etretat and so on. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend the house to anyone looking for a quiet holiday home with beautiful scenery right from the garden door.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Les Iris.

We spent a week in this lovely cottage with our kids (5yrs and 2yrs). The village is like something from a fairy tale and is great for day trips - we went to honfleur, bayeux, pont-audemer (great Saturday market). 5 mins drives from Bourneville where you can buy fresh bread/pastries. The house is simple, warm and cosy, with spectacular views of the Seine which is right at the end of the garden. You can go for nice walks along the river. The garden is brilliant for kids to run around in (just the job for an Easter egg hunt). The kitchen could have done with some basics that would have been helpful (sharper knives, peeler, garlic crusher, tin foil/cling film, more ovenware options), but we did fine. The owner was lovely and helpful in all communications. A real treat to stay in a proper thatched cottage and get to know Normandy.

There were 4 of us, 2 couples, all in their 70s, none of whom had been to Normandy before. We intended to use Vieux Port as a base camp and it was perfect for that purpose. Beaches, Honfleur, Etretat, Pont l'Eveque, Pont Audemer, and many others were all welcoming as well as fascinating. We had a lot of meals in the kitchen where we could watch the Seine traffic out the window. The Wi-Fi worked well, Bourneville, the closest village was fun and perfect for small grocery needs and everyone we met was fantastic . We started out with a flat tire on the rental car (French rental cars do not have jacks) and one set of neighbors (who we had never met) took the wives into town for groceries while other neighbors and new friends invited us for dinner. EXTRAORDINARY! The Rue des Chaumieres is a fairyland on its own with thatched roof cottage after thatched cottage and lots of flowers and fairies and friendly gremlins around every corner. Les Iris's location, facilities and atmosphere were all as advertised and as anticipated. Merçi beaucoup, Jean-Marc. Tip: of the two restaurants across the street from each other, the less fancy one on the corner is superior in food, atmosphere and joie de vivre. We were kidding the chef about hamburgers so on our second visit, he offered us "leetle am-boo-gers." We each had pate de foie gras on little crackers! Delicious and droll.

What a wonderful cottage, location and base for touring this part of France. Our party was from 4 years old to 81 years old and the Cottage catered perfectly for everyone. Its comfortable beds and hot showers were the perfect end to busy days. the garden was perfect for the children to run off some energy and the adults to let the tension wash away. Also the local riverside walks start through the gate at the bottom of the garden, with an area that is a local beauty spot. In the local village of Bourneville you will find a wonderful restaurant with great food and that catered for the children wonderfully (Risle Seine) as well as all your local provisions (also cheap fuel - especially diesel). Wonderful Rouen is 40 min drive away as is Yvetot where there is good shopping and restaurants and you can park for free and take a train to Paris. At Pont Audemer you will find a great swimming pool for the children with large shallow pool and cool water slid as well as good shopping opportunities. We will certainly be returning to continue our exploring of this wonderful part of France.

We had a fantastic holiday in France...and this house was truly spectacular. We have stayed in many cottages over the years and I must say this ranks amongst the most beautiful. It is the first time we have stayed somewhere where visitors stop and take pictures! Picture postcard cottage and village. Lots to do close and afar. Even drove to Disneyland Paris! Christine (who prepared the house for us) was very welcoming despite our limited grasp of the French language. Owner very helpful with lots of suggestions on what to do and where to go. I am sure we will visit again soon.

We had a wonderful time staying at Les Iris! The accommodations are modern, and the character of the thatched cottage has been beautifully preserved. We enjoyed exploring the beautiful little towns nearby, especially Honfleur, where we enjoyed a meal at La Fleur de Sel. In the evenings we loved sitting out in the garden, having a glass of the delicious local cider, and watching ships go down the Seine. We would recommend Les Iris as a great base for exploring Normandy, and a relaxing place to get away from it all.
