About the Area
Nestled just 4 miles inside the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park is the charming and historic town of Wawona. Located at the base of Chilnualna Falls (the second-highest vertical-drop waterfall in Yosemite) and home to the principal trailheads into the southern Yosemite wilderness, Wawona is also the closest town to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.
Wawona has the feel of a small town but is bustling with activity! Over 160 residents, including Yosemite Park employees, live in Wawona and can be seen gathering at the town's community center, playing a pickup basketball game at the elementary school, jogging on one of the many picturesque trails, or simply walking their dogs and baby strollers through the winding residential streets. The historic Wawona Swinging Bridge boasts the best natural water slide in the Park! The historic village is filled with docents, stagecoach rides, horseback rides, and barn dances in the summer season, and the Wawona Meadow Loop offers year-round riparian meadow wildlife viewing.
Wawona was known to the local Native American Miwok as Pallachun (a good place to stay). It is located entirely within Yosemite National Park (it preceded the founding of the park as a national recreation area) and is located on the South Fork of the wild and scenic Merced River, on the main highway (State Route 41) from Fresno to Yosemite Valley.
Galen Clark, who helped gain preservation legislation for Mariposa Grove and what later became part of Yosemite National Park, occupied the Wawona area in 1855 and established a tourist rest and modest ranch, which he later sold and made into a hotel and resort property (the Wawona Hotel). The Wawona post office was established in 1878 and was originally called Clark's Station.

The property was as advertised. It’s a quaint little place which has a woodsy vibe. The cabin is a little dated, stove, fridge, lighting, etc. but it was great for what we needed. Bed is comfortable, we loved the fireplace, porch, and grill. It is about an hour to the valley. Would definitely recommend it.

The cabin was absolutely perfect as a launching point for Yosemite National Park. We loved our stay and would recommend this cabin to park visitors.

84 Hastings Hideaway was a true gem. We truly enjoyed our stay in the property. It was clean and well equipped with all of the necessity items we needed. But, the property can use some love (updating). The driveway is very rutted; I was able to easily pull in with our truck. But a lower riding vehicle may have some issues. There is also a tripping hazard at the bottom of the stair leading up to the patio. This can easily be fixed. As for the interior of the cabin. As mentioned, it was clean and well equipped. However, it's stuck in the 70's and could use some freshening up (way too much paneling), the stove/oven combo should be replaced as well. All that being said. Would we stay in 84 Hastings Hideaway again. Absolutely!

It was fairly warm in the park this week and air conditioning or at least ceiling fans would have been nice. The cabin looked clean (swept/vacuumed) but when I dropped something on the kitchen floor and used paper towel to clean - I discovered the floor was very dirty! It was just okay for the 3 night stay.
