As a frequent business traveler, I sometimes want the feel of home away from home, and the Modern Durham Retreat for the bill. The host was very kind, gracious, and quick to respond. The kitchen had all the necessities of home for cooking. The beds were comfortable, and the quick responses of the host was a reminder of what customer loyalty is all about. Great property!

The host could not have been more gracious, professional, and accommodating! Our family enjoyed the best Thanksgiving ever in this home, and we are truly appreciative!

Overall this was a good place to stay, but I wouldn't say it was great. There were several things that, in our subjective experience, made this less than a five-star or four-star experience:When we arrived, a "low battery" alert was going off on a smoke alarm. We had to search around until we found a bag of smoke alarms stuffed into the laundry closet, and it took a half hour or so to figure out which one was causing the alarm, and remove the battery.Things in the home didn't feel nice & clean overall. The closets were messily organized. There was (*ahem*) short & curly hairs left in the shower drain. The walls were poorly painted and had some damage.There was a large, loud dog two houses down the street, and it was barking all day long.The neighborhood has a lot of trash around on the streets. Polyester sheets & blankets aren't very breathable or comfortable.The streetlights are very blue! Blue light is pouring in the windows at night, which is very bad for sleep & circadian rhythms.Highway is nearby, so there is some noise from the highway.I realize several of these things aren't the fault of the hosts, but they still affected our overall experience as guests. It's a very passable place, but not my favorite. So I think all in all, three stars gives an accurate description of this "good", but not "very good" or "great" experience.
