Private studio guesthouse in Watertown CT

I was attending seminars at the Taft School for the week and the location is perfect for commuting there. The neighborhood is a quiet, residential area within a 6 minute drive to downtown Watertown and Taft School. It was convenient to be that close when the nearest hotels are a 15 minute drive. The room and bathroom were clean. The shower is nice and has lovely water pressure. The small coffee and tea bar has an electric kettle which was very nice. The small efficiency kitchen was nice to have. There is a designated parking spot for you in the driveway which is convenient. The host has anything you would need hygiene wise in the bathroom.

Though clean, upon entering the room I noticed a bad odor I couldn't quite identify. This odor kept me up the first night. It smelled like somebody was smoking and it was coming in through the AC vent or that there was a smoker in the room previously and despite trying to clean, there was still nicotine residue somewhere around the room. It was particularly noticeable by the small gray loveseat, as the bag I had sitting on it brought the smell home with me. I ended up buying a glade plug in and placing that in the room to mask the smell, however, like I said above, all my clothes and bags have that noticeable, tobacco like sent now after arriving home. There are No Smoking signs posted around the room, so I am not sure what the source of this could be but as a non-smoker, it was noticeable and bothersome. The condition of the mattress is poor. It is very warn out and lumpy. There's a huge crater towards the one side and it is not uniform at all, so when you lay on it, the mattress just feels old and well used to the point that it should be replaced. Hard in some spots and very giving in others. I found the mattress uncomfortable to the point of not being able to sleep. There were a lot of earwigs (sometimes called pincher bugs) around. I saw earwigs crawling in the shower and bathroom and then again by the brick wall near door. They are usually found in dark, moist areas like basements. No big deal at first because I only saw a few and disposed of them. But then I started finding them in my purse and my bag that were sitting on the floor at the edge of the gray loveseat. Over the course of the week, I found at least three crawling in my bags when I left my room in the mornings.

Location

Tight space, bathroom was almost as big as space. Couldn’t really hang inside without being on the bed. Small couch was really not a good spot to sit, should trade for a chair or remove for a small table. Has a cook top, would not use to make more than grill cheese, not vented. Large modular closet seemed a bit too large for space, just wall hooks would work better

Host provided really clear directions and instructions for arrival so was a very easy check in process. Studio room is compact but well equipped with everything you need and has been cleverly designed to maximise space and utility. Nice to have tea and coffee facilities and small kitchen area to prepare foods. Bed was comfortable and bathroom was clean and well stocked with toiletries etc. Massive TV - we treated it as a cinema screen and watched a movie! Nicely located near to Washington and a good base for exploring some of Connecticut.

The bathroom sliding door was a bit awkward to keep on its glider rail, and the partition wall between the bathroom and the rest of the studio is open at the top so the extractor noise etc. and light is clear in the rest of the room and vice versa. No issue but useful to be aware of.
