Maison Constant - Le Séquoia

The Maison Constant has four apartments in its front buildings. I stayed in the Sequoia apartment for a week, and was sorry to have to leave - I'd have happily staid there for weeks longer. The apartment is very artfully done up, respecting the age of the building while making it into something that conforms to current expectations of luxury. The kitchen and living room are just as I would've done them or better, and I especially liked the touch of vintage from the record player and the vinyls of Django Reinhardt. The bathroom is an exercise in luxury - from a bathtub to a rain shower, and the fluffiest ever towels - sorry to have pulled a thread on one, my mum says that could maybe be prevented by soaking them overnight in cold water before the first wash (but I suspect they'll become less fluffy that way). In the morning (or early afternoon) I really enjoyed having my croissant and coffee in the park, with a view of the giant sequoia tree that the apartment is named for, the park and the statues - and I felt like at that moment there was no better place in the world. The apartment is within a minute of the best boulangeries France has to offer, even I while very much not a morning person found it no trouble to get fresh viennoiserie for breakfast. The park itself is also very nice to have a view on or to walk around in - no, I didn't manage to find the turtle, but I'd happily spend a day trying. Being in the center of the town and on one of the busiest roads, you'll get some noise from the street but with the modern windows and glazing it is easy to shut that out. I slept quite well, even sleeping late on a weekday the traffic didn't bother me at all. The most important part probably though is the history that emanates from the place. From the giant tree that towers over everything to the smallest detail of the walls, the lamps and the fence, it feels like everything has a story to tell, and all of it is there if you bother to...

The bed in the apartment is one of those things that is composed of two singles joined together with a zipper or velcro. I'm kind of used to a large lits-jumeaux and I tend to turn around a lot so it might be just me, but I ended up in the seam of the two parts every night. I'd have liked a single mattress a lot better.

La maison Constant fut une parenthèse enchantée durant notre séjour dans la belle ville d'Autun. Son magnifique parc où trône le séquoia géant, bien que situé en centre ville, est de tout repos. L'appartement est superbe et très bien équipé. Amandine est charmante, enthousiaste. Nous avons apprécié les échanges. La région est très belle et riche en découvertes. Nous n'hésiterons pas à revenir et à en parler autour de nous.

Sequoia is een mooi en sfeervol appartement, in oude stijl maar gerenoveerd en van alle gemakken voorzien met een moderne, lekker ruime keuken, een regendouche en dubbel glas in de goed sluitende ramen. Tv met Netflix en dvdspeler (en een kast vol dvd’s in het gezamenlijke halletje). Er hoort een aangename buitenruimte met zitje bij (inclusief het mooie beeld dat je op de foto’s ziet). Verder een grote tuin (of park?), met fruitbomen en kruiden die we mochten plukken. Vriendelijke eigenaren die in het grote huis in het midden van de tuin wonen dat je op de foto in de Booking informatie van boven ziet. Fijn dat er tralies voor de ramen zitten (anders klim je vanaf de stoep zó het raam in) en dat de ramen een filter hebben zodat je er overdag vanaf de straat niet door heen kan kijken. En het afgesloten terrein waardoor je wel een veilig gevoel krijgt.

Het appartement ligt pal aan een vrij drukke straat, bij het toegangshek tot de tuin (zie: foto's). De smalle straat met aan alle kanten steen (dus extra weerkaatsend) heeft éénrichtingsverkeer en is het begin van de 30 km zone in het centrum. Er wordt duidelijk niet gehandhaafd met b.v. cameratoezicht, dus helaas houdt bijna niemand zich aan deze maximumsnelheid. Met als gevolg voortdurend verkeersherrie die voor ons niet de ‘rust’ bracht die in andere Booking-reviews over deze plek werd genoemd. Alle drie de ramen van Sequoia grenzen aan deze straat, waardoor je zoals wij in de zomer moet kiezen tussen hitte of lawaai. Het appartement beschikt niet over airco, dus koeling, vooral na zonsondergang, moet van buiten komen. Het bed staat op anderhalve meter van de straat. Dit hadden wij wel willen weten vóórdat we voor 12 nachten in juli/augustus dit appartement boekten! Ik heb hier niets over kunnen vinden in de beschrijving op de site van Booking. En er is een goede plafondventilator in de slaapkamer, maar naast een lekker ‘briesje’ koelt dit niet echt. De 1e etages, appartementen Le Ginkgo en L’Érable hebben tenminste nog een raam aan de tuinkant dat ze ’s nachts open kunnen zetten. ’s Nachts was het rustiger, maar toch schrokken we een paar keer wakker van opgevoerde motoren die tussen 01.00 en 03.00 uur met een noodgang en brullende motor door de straat raceten. Dit alles gaat vooral irriteren als je er langer dan 3 à 4 nachten logeert. Parkeren kan gratis in de straat, maar hoe meer gasten er in de vier appartementen logeerden, hoe spannender het was of er wel een plekje in de straat te vinden was. Een paar honderd meter verderop (300m, 5 minuten lopen) is een grote parkeerplaats, dat is wel een uitkomst tenzij je vanaf daar alle bagage in etappes mee moet sjouwen bij aankomst of vertrek.
