Amba Yaalu - Thema Collection "The first women-led hotel in Sri Lanka

The location is great. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. There is a lake behind the hotel that is accessible. Lots of trees giving a nice breeze. Staff is friendly and helpful. However, two very negative points. The restaurant is full of flies and the enclosed area with buffet tables have too many flies. With the unfortunate habit of guests not closing the lids sometimes you get flies in some dishes. You have the unfortunate experience of flies hovering around your plate constantly. The restaurant staff is totally ignorant. I also used the spa. It is a total ripoff. The doctor and the masseur are both incompetent. Just applying oil and rubbing seems to be the method with understanding of the muscles. The spa reception area also has flies. It is high time for the management to address the issue of flies.

Absolutely loved every part of my stay at Amba Yaalu! From the moment we arrived, the place had such a peaceful, welcoming vibe. The location is fantastic—tucked away just enough to feel private and relaxing, but still super convenient for exploring the area. The rooms were spotless and really comfortable, with big windows that brought in loads of natural light (waking up to those views was a treat!). The hotel’s design mixes modern touches with a bit of local style, which we loved. There’s also lots of mangoes and greenery throughout the property, making it feel like a little oasis. Food was another highlight—everything was fresh and full of flavor. Breakfast was something I actually looked forward to and the variety was superb, dinner had plenty of delicious local dishes to choose from. You can really tell the kitchen team puts care into what they do. But hands down, what made my stay truly special was the staff. Everyone was friendly and helpful, always happy to chat or offer tips for getting around. Major thanks to Manager Jeewanthi for being so attentive and thoughtful, and to Chathuni and Pamudi at the front desk and waiting staff.. they we amazing.. One thing I want to mention (that I actually respect a lot): the hotel hires local ladies to run things. It’s such a cool way to support the community, and you feel the personal touch in so many little details. Yes, there were a couple of minor hiccups, but honestly, they were nothing compared to all the positives. I’ve been traveling for 30 years and don’t say this lightly—Aamba Yalu is my favorite place I’ve stayed anywhere in Sri Lanka. Already planning to come back, and I’d rate this place nothing less than a 10/10 If you want a memorable stay with real heart and local charm, look no further.
