We had a great weekend here! It was above 90 both days so the AC indoors was a godsend, but we still spent lots of time on the deck and the beach, wading in the water and even took a dip. The house was just as pictured and has everything you would want in the kitchen and lots of other useful amenities. We all slept really well. You might want to bring water shoes for the beach because it’s pretty rocky and at low tide there are tons of sharp barnacles and oyster shells - but that means oysters and clams, which we harvested and ate! It also gets a little buggy at dusk so bug spray would helpful to extend your time on the awesome deck. We were asked to sign a rental contract outside of Airbnb, which I didn’t realize from the listing and made me a little uncomfortable at first, but ultimately it was fine. The cleaning/checkout requests were totally reasonable.

We loved The Captain’s Retreat! Lisa, the owner, made the whole process smooth and easy. We didn’t meet in person, but she was very friendly via text. You can tell a lot of thought and care went into making this an inviting retreat. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen is fully equipped, there’s charcoal for the barbecue, and everything is very clean. There were plenty of towels, and then a whole other set of beach towels. The covered outdoor spaces are also great for hanging out. There are plentiful oysters on the beach at low tide – check with WDFW online for licensing and up-to-date safety info. The location is great for an escape. Bring kayaks if you have them – you can paddle to Hope Island. If you have a motor boat, there’s a free public boat launch less than half a mile away. Lake Cushman is a 45-minute drive, and it is beautiful and great for swimming. We plan to return next summer.

Very nice place with a great view. Beach access requires stairs (so be careful with grandparents or little kids) but offered great amenities. We stayed in Feb so mostly just enjoyed the view. Very well appointed with everything you could ever need in the kitchen and nice touches throughout.

What a beautiful view and a great place to relax with family! We had birthdays and a young adult returning from abroad to celebrate and this was a lovely place to do it! We decided not to eat out so we did a lot of cooking and were so happy to discover the kitchen was WELL equipped and comfortable to cook in. The home was clean and cozy and the fireplace was soooo nice. For me, nothing beats a warm crackling fire and there was plenty of firewood to use. We also played several boards as there were a TON of games to play. When the tide was out we enjoyed walks down the shore and found a lot of cool shells and rocks. When the tide was in we enjoyed watching the wildlife, we spotted sea lions, bald eagles, fish and even an otter! The linens were clean and cozy and the host was very easy to communicate with and pleasant Thank you for a lovely stay!

We had a nice short stay on a cold rainy January weekend. Nothing beats warming yourself infront of a fire while looking out over the water! Great spot. House was clean and had all the essentials. The beach access was a hit with both our 4 year old and our dog!

The perfect getaway spot on the Hood Canal! Peaceful. quiet, cozy, cute. Outstanding views and all the little extras that you don't expect, but really add to the vacation experience. Fireplaces, outdoor deck, barbeque, firepit, a small rowboat and PFDs, great TV and tons of games, puzzles, etc. Instructions were explicit and covered every possible appliance and activity. Lisa is quick to respond to questions. Be aware that amenities are a bit of a drive so plan ahead for food, etc before you head for the Captain's Retreat. You won't want to leave once you get there! Taylor's Seafood in South Shelton is fantastic for shellfish! Also take in to consideration that major sightseeing (like Olympic National Park) is a two-plus hour drive away. Certainly worth it! All in all, the Captain's Retreat is the perfect getaway!

This home is clean, cozy and wonderful. They have done such a great job with this space. Really appreciate the attention to detail such as cleanliness, having nice stainless steel (big and small) pots and pans, adequate supply of both bath and kitchen cloth and paper towels, tidy space, etc. It's small but really comfortable. We came on a 90 degree day and the a/c kept the inside nice and cool, then, the refreshing ocean wind came in the early evening. We were surprised how wonderful it was outside when that wind came in on such a hot day. They have three options for outside space (covered and protected deck with a gas fire-pit), another deck a few steps away that is partially covered with a huge table and another fire pit partially down to the beach facing the water. The covered deck is lovely with glass panes so I imagine this is nice all year long. They do ask for the outside cushions to be brought in at night but I liked this because the outside cushions are well kept and not mildewy. The only thing that I wish I would have known is that this property faces the industrial area of Shelton which is the mill. It really isn't a big deal but I wish I would have known in advance (probably should have taken a closer look at satellite images). But, during the day it really wasn't that noticeable. Kind of interesting actually. Wanted to let folks know that it's NOT a stinky area. It's just a mill and the air smelled ocean fresh. I still wish I would have known because at night the view is of the industrial lights. Some people may not mind those lights or if you plan to cozy up inside or on the covered deck with a fire and not stare out to the horizon, it's probably not a big deal. I can confirm the inlet is very quiet and peaceful. Just wish I knew in advance about the mill view. However, I would still highly recommend this property. The reviews are accurate that it is quiet, clean, peaceful, well stocked, comfortable, we loved our stay and the property is beautiful and well cared for. Also, nice privacy from the neighbors. You can't see the houses on either side due to the shrubbery. The owner is very responsive as well. I highly recommend this space.
