The Old Smithy

The old smithy was spacious, with a lovely courtyard, and sunny kitchen. Having a car is a must to travel around the district. The lovely beams in the rooms were fitting for the place and the goodies were appreciated. We were a group of four adults who really enjoyed our stay which would have received a higher score with some quick fixes. See comments below.

If the owners want guests to have an even better experience, they may wish to consider some improvements. Leave enough toilet paper for the duration of the guests stay, a potato peeler, small sharp knives, oven mitts, and replace the large utensils with sturdy ones. The stairs are really steep and the hand tail stops 3/4 way up. The mattress on the first floor needs replacing as it had sagged on the sides so you kept rolling to the outside of the bed.

The cottage was beautifully decorated and had a cosy atmosphere. It was clean, and the location made it easy to explore nearby areas. The property had character, and the kitchen was well-equipped.

The parking situation was difficult, and the listing overstates the available space. The road outside is busy, and turning right out of the property feels unsafe. The mattresses were extremely firm and uncomfortable—I struggled to sleep, and it caused back pain. The welcome pack was generic; as a pregnant guest, prosecco wasn’t useful, and I would have appreciated decaf options or milk in the fridge, especially when arriving late with young children. One of the bedrooms was too small to move around comfortably. The stairs were steep and squeaky, making it hard to move around quietly at night. I requested a high chair, but none was provided. The cleaning tasks expected from guests (e.g., stripping beds, emptying bins) were unexpected—I would expect these to be handled by the cleaning team, not paying guests.
