For those who want a truly exceptional accomodation, Temple Stay is to be warmly recommended. I could not have wished for a finer, more authentic place to stay, surrounded by beautiful gardens and with the extraordinary offer to attend the morning ceremony of the temple if one so pleased. The hosts were extremely friendly, the bed comfortable and the family's dog the most adorable creature in all of Asia. I have travelled extensively in Japan, yet seldom come across a place or such beauty and quality.
Aside from the bathroom, there is no hot running water. A very minor inconvenience. And though it is no fault of the owners, it is unfortunate that bus connections on the island are relatively few and far between. It makes late arrival a bit of a challenge, so my recommendation is to not pick the very last ferry as I did.
