I believe Scots will like this place. I’m from the States, and Dye Mill has attributes that we Yanks are not familiar with. Here’s what a Yank will want to know before booking here:The proprietor’s lodge website is clear that “Electricity is paid for by a 1 coin meter.” Yanks are unfamiliar with electric coin meters. We’ve learned what it means: The lodge will have no electricity when you arrive. It will be cold and dark. In a cabinet in back you’ll find an electric meter with a coin-fed lockbox next to it. When you put a 1 coin in the slot, you’ll have electricity until you’ve used whatever power 1 pays for. If you use the water heater, that 1 will give you about ½ hour of power. Then the lights and heat go out until you put another coin in. We spent 8/day on electricity, on 55 deg F days. You get no warning when the lights are about to shut off. Also when you book, they will send you a phone number to call for problem-solving. Save that number. You will use it. The fellow who answers is good at solving your problems here. The second thing you’ll need to know is this. There is a note hanging above the dining table that says, “Fan is in the cupboard (useful for keeping midges away)”Finally, we had decent internet connection two of the three days we stayed.

Our first impression of the stay was not a good one because the provided "get directions" link to Google Maps (and Google Maps searching itself) takes you to lat/long coordinates that are several hundred yards across away in a pasture. We pulled up at 9pm Saturday night and tried calling the number provided, and it said "office is closed" -- fortunately, there were people in a cottage at the wrong location who had seen the issue before and pointed us to the right place. The lockbox check in worked fine. Place was clean in general but had a musty smell, I think it was from the vacuum cleaner or something else in the front cabinet. It was not something that kept us from staying, so minor but wanted to mention it. We did like the location. The coin-fed operation of the electricity was annoying at times -- it cut off twice when someone was in the shower. (It is mentioned in the property description.) We like the little town of Lamlash, so no qualms about the location on the island. Overall, it is a cute little cottage and served its purpose. We did very much appreciate the 1GBP coins left by the owner so that we did not have to pay for the electricity ourselves. If that is the norm, they need to yank that thing out and remove the headache of feeding that machine for us renters. They need to fix the google maps location and directions link. All this said, we'd probably stay again now that we're familiar with the place's quirks.
