Barcelo Funchal Oldtown

First time staying at a Barcelo hotel. Great stay from beginning to end. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Facilities were great. Rooms clean, spacious and bed was very comfortable. Roof top pool and bar area was amazing. A big thank you for sparkling wine and anniversary note in our room, that was a lovely touch.

Stayed at the end of February 2026. We are a healthy couple in our mid60’s. The hotel I a 2 minute walk to the seafront Madeira sign. The most comfortable bed on our trip. Lovely room. Best breakfast selection I have ever seen. Staff very professional and accommodating. Hotel is near several plazas in a very walkable area. Lots of restaurants shopping and street entertainment nearby. The weather was off and on but that didn’t affect our enjoyment one iota. Wonderful base for your Madeira adventure.

Despite a few small niggles if I was returning to Madeira/Funchal I would definitely book to stay here again. Good - location is exceptional - breakfast plentiful & varied - beds large and comfortable, good range of pillows - pool area & cabanas (we always got one even when returning from daytrips at 3pm) - minibar - free for the first of each item Negatives - housekeeping inconsistent - sometimes we got water, sometimes not, same with fresh towels, bath mat etc, everyday there was always at least 1 thing, in general they did a good job though - noise - you're in the city centre, there will be some noise, we'd emailed ahead of time and asked for a room known to be one of the quieter ones, in general it was fine for street noise but our bedroom opened onto the gym (room 411) so noise from there was annoying, especially when people were using the treadmill, we were also below the rooftop lounge area and even at 11.30pm at night the noise was like nails on a blackboard as furniture was being dragged across the terrace floor (while cleaning?) - would be great if breakfast started a little bit earlier for the early risers/those going on day trips

Perfect introduction to Madeira. It’s in the middle of the old town and 2 mins to the oceanfront. Some of the best restaurants are around the hotel and is the best base for walking around old town before exploring the rest of the island. Breakfast had a good variety of local and international flavors and they had champagne at 8am🤭 Impeccable cleanliness. Lovely balcony that overlooked the square - there was live music at night and I could hear it inside the room so the doors aren’t that well-sound proofed. Just a note - not a dealbreaker as everything else was perfect.
