Check in simple, very pleasant receptionist. Mews room so not inside hotel, room was cold on arrival, no heating in bathroom/ toilet only warm (just) towel rail. Occupants im room above noisy. Pleasant surroundings. Not cheap in the lounge bar. Breakfast was good, served plated but typical continental type offering as well. Would have liked advice before arriving on parking. Not easy to find, there are two car parks but we didn't see the second (and bigger) car park until we were leaving. Very central so would consider going there again (now we know where to park).

Thought it a little on expensive side for the room very small expect because it would be serving larger groups for weddings. As a couple would not return but would return to restaurant which was excellent. Very clean and lovely staff comfortable beds.

A really lovely stay, local to the town centre. The car park was tiny due to some on going work on the premises, but to have parking in a town centre hotel. The bed was comfortable, the facilities in the room great and despite a slight issue in the room on arrival, this was sorted very quickly and efficiently. Breakfast was amazing too!

Our stay was during the heatwave and without air conditioning. We were eventually moved. The front desk staff was unprofessional and definitely could use customer care training. Otherwise the food and the restaurant staff were exceptional. We would highly recommend and did let the manager know that there was a problem.

I found The Royal & Fortescue to be a lovely comfortable place to stay in the centre of Barnstaple very close to all amenities including the bus station which was so handy for getting to other near by attractions. The hotel is very clean and welcoming. We had a really nice relaxing stay and if in Barnstaple again would be more than happy to stay again.

Right in the center of town and an easy walk from the train station in Barnstaple. Everything is right there in walking distance and it's all just as funky and charming and welcoming as can be! The hotel's foundation has sunken a bit (or more in some places) which is charming but a little disconcerting if you're thinking you might fall out of bed!

We stayed there one night, found it on the internet, photos looked lovely, they wrote they are pets friendly. We had with us our dog and when a person at reception saw a dog she changed our room to a horrible, damp stinking one, I saw dark patches next to radiator on the wall, once touched it they were wet! We asked for another room and they changed it to one next door to that terrible one. The only difference was it didn’t have wet walls, stank really bad too, heating was not working when we ask about it, we were told that there is no need for heating as it was warm for last days. In the end they brought us a little portable heater. Conclusion: maybe rooms in main section of this hotel are nice but if you travel with a dog you land up in a very old, not renovated for ages, very damp smelling part of the hotel still being charged as for nice rooms.

Convenient for the town, but parking and access is tricky - carrying bags from the car is quite a distance. Higgledy stair cases even after the lifts take you to the correct floor. Corridors in particular are in need of updating. No fridge in the room. No air conditioning - needed window open all night and felt like a security risk as there was relatively easy access from the flat roof outside. Unappealing view. Comfortable, sizable bed.

The service was immaculate, as always. Nothing was too much trouble and the quality of service was exceptional. When my first room had a knocking sound, this was reported and i was immediately offered another room. Sadly, the thin walls in the replacement room and noise in the alleyway by the side of the room meant that sleep was difficult until late. I'd advise stating at the front or on the right of the building. Hotel choice and facilities are great, as was the food.

Ideal location for Theatre. Second stay. Friendly staff. Were informed prior to stay that a party with music would be in progress up until midnight. Not a problem. Unfortunate disturbance at 5am when occupant of adjoining bedroom required attention after incident. No fault of management
