I booked this stay for the view, and it did not disappoint. I got some great photos and videos of the bay. What I didn’t like is that this is a convention oriented property in an isolated location. It’s apparently a wood structure because the floor creaked and groaned as I walked down the hall. The restaurant closed at 9 but didn’t accept dinner orders after 8:30. No sundries shop for snacks and nowhere in walking distance to buy any. Guests need to conform to the property’s schedule or be disappointed. What I disliked the most was that as I was getting ready in the morning, someone was flying a drone that came within maybe 10 feet of my balcony. I had no way to know whether they were spying on me. The front desk said they were making a marketing video or something. If they had taken guests into consideration, they would have waited until after the 10 am check out time to do it.

I recently stayed at the Copthorne Hotel in Paihia. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the hotel grounds were clean and well-kept. Unfortunately, the overall experience was let down by the poor quality of the room. The room itself was old and dated, with several lights not working and noticeable dust on shelves and surfaces. Being located so close to the service room made it quite noisy at times, which affected the ability to relax or sleep. Parking was limited, which added some frustration, though the in-room dining was a highlight. The food was flavoursome and enjoyable overall, but my burger came smothered in far too much unmelted cheese, which took away from what could’ve been a great meal. while the staff and grounds were good, the tired room condition and lack of attention to maintenance made it hard to justify the cost of the stay. Would only consider returning if the rooms were updated.

The resort was lovely, but rooms are not soundproof and neighbours talked loud in the middle of the night. Restaurant for dinner was empty and food was not good. Strange because their breakfast was good in the mornings.

Booking in did not go well. Its seems that when the people at the property know that you booked through Expedia, they give you any average room that is outdated, or in poor condition. I had to query the room allocation the next and the staff at the reception said that their was a mistake made. this is not the first time something like this happens. I get the feeling that most properties have a pool of rooms that are put aside for people who book through websites like Expedia. So, these rooms will be very far away from the amenities etc. I was not happy but it was fixed after the fact. This should not be happening,.

The staff were generally helpful, but for the price paid, the rooms felt quite dated. I also had an uncomfortable experience when using the microwave in the laundry room to heat milk for my baby — the security staff on Sunday, 8 June gave me a suspicious look and questioned what I was doing. As a parent, this made me feel quite unwelcome. It would be great if all staff, including security, were briefed to approach guests in a more courteous and understanding manner.

Copthorne hotels across New Zealand were all rather swanky back in the day. I do find most of them have kept up with slight moderations within each room to stay modern yet simple, and Bay of Islands Copthorne has done just that. Big comfortable beds. Clean bathrooms. Lovely efficient and friendly check in by team. Tidy grounds and gardens. I also loved the lemon and ginger tea bags available. Value for money, comfort and general warmth.
