    This is an enormous hotel that is 188 years old, so I'd expect it to reflect it's age. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. The public parts of the hotel are well kept. Our room ***, was old but clean enough . The bed was quite hard and we woke with back ache. The second night we did not sleep as the people next door were noisy until early hours and whoever was above us was walking about on the creaky floorboards continously until 2am. It sounded like they were practicing their dance moves. Sound in old hotels can't be helped but we won't stay again. It wasn't the staff's fault so we didn't mention it, Parking £28 and the car park next door is £3.80 for 1 hour. Excellent location though.

    We had booked a room with a balcony through Agoda and specifically paid extra for this room category. However, upon arrival at the hotel, we were told that our reservation was for a standard room and that we were not entitled to a balcony or sea view. What was particularly disappointing was that our Agoda booking clearly showed the room as including a balcony. We had therefore paid an additional amount specifically for this feature, only to be told at check-in that the hotel would not provide the room we had booked. We understand that there can sometimes be discrepancies between booking platforms and hotels, but in such a situation, we would expect the hotel to make a genuine effort to resolve the issue, especially when the guest has already paid extra for a particular room category. Unfortunately, that did not happen in our case. The room itself may have been fine, but the experience was overshadowed by the way our booking was handled. A hotel should honour the room category and facilities that a guest has paid for, or at the very least offer a reasonable alternative or compensation when there is an issue. Overall, this was a disappointing experience and certainly not what we expected after specifically paying more for a balcony room. I would recommend that guests double-check their room category directly with the hotel before arrival if booking through Agoda.
