Comfortable, spacious farmhouse with problematic communication
We had a whole 2-story house to ourselves in this village! It felt like an old farmhouse with lots of modern amenities, like an updated kitchen with a dishwasher, comfortable beds with lots of pillows, and an artistic new bathroom. Loved the large farm table in the kitchen, and the spacious living room for hanging out. We arrived in the middle of a torrential rainstorm, but there was a covered walkway where the keys were, and a covered porch for wet shoes and things. Once we got inside and turned on the heat, we were warm and dry. We had to open all the storm shutters to get any light, but once we did, there was lots of light upstairs in the bedrooms, a great view from the bathroom and terrace, filtered light downstairs, and the front garden/yard provided some privacy. The heat worked great. There was a terrace with table and chairs and a view that we could not use because it was too cold, but it would have been pleasant to sit there. The locks and keys were found and all worked once we figured them out, although we were told no one locks their doors there. Location was ideal if you don't mind a hill - just up one steep block from the main part of town, with all the cafes and restaurants, and only a block and a half from where our friends lived. We were there for five days, two of which I stayed in bed with a cold in the sunny upstairs bedroom, feeling warm and cozy. We parked just up the hill a bit in a free town lot, and there was always a space, but this was late September, when most of the crowds had left. The town has a nice variety of restaurants and cafes, and a very helpful tourist office within a block, who gave us great ideas for biking. The bike rental shop is about a mile away, so it was good we had a car to get there.
The location on a steep one-way street made it challenging to park and unpack, especially during a rainstorm, but it was doable. We loved the hike down the hill to town on the little pathways, but others might not find it as easy. I was very disappointed about the communication with the host, via the property manager. We used booking.com messages and it helped that there is a translation app so I could translate their French. They did not respond very quickly to my pre-trip questions and they could not provide the key entrance information until the day of travel, which is always nerve-wracking. It was easy to get in once we had the info. The property manager was very responsive to my questions while we were there - how does the heat work, etc. However, when I reported that the toaster and one of the blinds were broken when we arrived, they immediately talked about charging us for fixing them! I talked them out of that, and fixed the blinds myself. At times I felt I was talking to an AI bot rather than real people, as their names kept changing and sometimes the responses were robotic. The worst experience was the check-out procedure. I repeatedly asked for the check-out list days ahead so we would know what we had to do. They would not send it until the last day, and then it had the direction to take out the trash. This sounded simple until we went to do it - there were no trash bins, and the bins in town required you to have a special card from the residence to use them. The AI property manager insisted that there a card in the house, but there was not one, and they would not let us leave the trash on the porch for them to deal with. We spent precious time on our last morning talking with friends neighbors, & people in cafes about where to dump the trash. Finally our friends took it to use with their card. What would we have done without friends there? Overall, communication with host consumed too much time, preventable if they had come to property.
