TLDR: outstanding four bedroom apartment on the 19th floor situated just a few minutes walk from the trendy shopping district of Xintiandi and the Metro station. Booking. I used Booking.com to find and secure the apartment. Although I initially communicated via the booking.com messaging service, I soon switched over to WeChat (aka Weixin) as it was quicker and more convenient. You’ll need WeChat for use in China anyway so might as well get used to it before arriving. Payment Once the booking was secured, the landlord asked for payment of one night’s stay as a deposit. I did this through Alipay (another Chinese app you will need to download). Payment was fairly easy although do note, all transactions in China using these apps add a 3% surcharge if you spend over 200RMB. This is assuming you have linked it to a western bank card like I did. If you have a Chinese bank account then this doesn’t apply. Payment for the remainder of the stay was made when I arrived in Shanghai. Throughout the process, the landlord was very patient and helpful via conversations on wechat. We even had to stay one extra night due to the typhoon cancelling our transport back to Hong Kong, and they were very helpful in accommodating our last minute emergency. Finding the place This was easy. When we arrived at Hongqiao train station we simply booked a DiDi taxi ride (Chinese equivalent of Uber) by typing the address into the app. The landlord supplied a very detailed user guide to the flat and also sends a key code number which you use to enter the flat (ie no physical key or card needed). There are two tall tower blocks here, our flat was in tower block number one. These are clearly sign posted and all taxi drivers we used arrived and dropped us off here without any problems. There are two gated entrances: southeast gate and southwest gate. Both are super handy and the whole complex isn’t that large so it’s impossible to get lost.
I can’t think of too many downsides tbh. I guess I could mention that card payment is advertised as available here on booking.com and while this is offered, it is somewhat discouraged as they say that there is a fee added on if we were to sue visa or Mastercard. It wasn’t a bother as I was happy to pay via Alipay (which I had my debit cards linked to).
