Bartelshagen is a small village in the municipality of Saal between the towns of Ribnitz-Damgarten (approx. 18 km) and Barth (approx. 16 km) just a few kilometres from the Saaler Bodden, part of the Darß-Zingster-Bodden chain. The region around the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula is ideal for sailing and surfing. Nature lovers and birdwatchers also get their money's worth, as many migratory birds, especially cranes, stop off in the region in spring and autumn, and the well-developed network of cycle paths makes it easy to explore the region by bike. Artists and photographers are also often drawn to the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. Ahrenshoop (approx. 35 km away) with its art museum is known as an artists' colony and is particularly attractive for landscape painting, while the Baltic seaside resort of Zingst (approx. 23 km away) is dedicated to photography. Numerous photography workshops are held there throughout the year. Zingst is also the venue for the annual Horizonte environmental photography festival, and there is a restaurant and shops in Bartelshagen. There are other shops and a railway station in the surrounding area. There is also a surf school in Saal, just 5 km away. A motorway connection is about 30 km away. In the nearby towns of Ribnitz-Damgarten and Barth there are shopping centres, pubs, restaurants, boat hire and many sights, such as the amber factory in Ribnitz-Damgarten.
