About the Accommodation
The holiday apartment occupies the top floor (3rd floor) of the Hotel Sonne in the village of Amden high above Lake Walensee. This very centrally located holiday flat offers the services of a hotel (breakfast, half board, laundry service) in addition to the holiday apartment services on request. The well-equipped apartment with its spacious rooms can accommodate up to 5 people and is ideal accommodation for families or groups. At the centre of the accommodation is the spacious living room, equipped with a TV, which acts as the heart of the apartment. Directly adjacent is the kitchen, which leaves nothing to be desired with an oven, a fridge, an electric hob and a dining table that seats 5 people. The three bedrooms, two with queen-size beds and one with a double bed, are strategically positioned on the north side of the flat to ensure optimum peace and quiet. The bathroom, although compact, is finely equipped, with a bathtub and WC, and thus offers everything necessary for daily needs. Free Wi-Fi is available to guests throughout the house, making their stay in this welcoming flat even more enjoyable.

The ski slopes, sports shop, shopping facilities, bus stop, restaurants, the Mattstock chairlift as an excellent starting point for hikes and the indoor swimming pool with sauna are all within walking distance.

Amden is located in eastern Switzerland above Lake Walensee. The village offers a magnificent mountain backdrop and is only about an hour's drive from the centres of Zurich, St.Gallen or Chur. The diverse regions of Glarnerland, Heidiland, Graubünden and Zurich with Lake Zurich are easily accessible by bus, train or car. In winter, the family ski resort of Amden with its renowned ski school and other ski resorts in the surrounding area such as Flumserberg or Pizol, Elm or Braunwald are a great attraction. In spring, summer and autumn, the lake and the mountains provide a wonderful contrast and offer a wide range of activities.

We stayed in the family apartment on the top floor, with a stocked kitchen and three bedrooms. The rooms were clean and comfortable. There are mountain views from every window. The view across the lake is utterly fantastic. We were able to cook for ourselves most nights, but did eat authentic Swiss cuisine one day at the restaurant below. The family that runs this hotel/restaurant cares that you have an excellent time in the region. It is peaceful, stunning, and a very relaxing location, especially in spring/early summer when we visited. Close to the bus stop and the chairlift, we did a few hikes nearby and took longer train journeys to nearby Heididorf, Lietchenstein, and Lucerne. I absolutely would recommend this stay to anyone who wants to be a bit removed from the hustle and bustle of bigger cities, and who want a much more authentic Swiss vacation in the off-season.

Those travelling without a car should not be discouraged! Our vacation, we used the Travel Swiss Pass for unlimited SBB and network travel.
The bus service drops you right near the Hotel Sonne and gives you incredible views all around. There is no way to have this experience in the main cities. In addition, the bus and the trains are coordinated, so travelling around the region does not leave you waiting long between transfers.
The apartment is wonderful. The kitchen has basically everything you could need: coffee maker and coffee, basic spices, oils, vinegars, and even sets for fondue and for raclette. We would sit in front of the windows enjoying breakfast and coffee in the mornings before going out for the day. We enjoyed a supper at the hotel restaurant and had incredible Swiss cuisine. Made fresh, easy ordering, easy payment with a smartphone.
The mountain views are 360, unobstructed out the living room and kitchen, then a sharp angle up out the bedrooms and bathroom. There's a field right next to the hotel which in spring has charming bells from the goats grazing on the grasses.
There's a mini mart with fresh bread directly across the road and a bit larger of a supermarket within 200 metres between the hotel and the bus stop. Between the two we had everything we could possibly want.
The family that owns this hotel and restaurant are invested in you having a great time visiting the region. For folks with the fitness to walk up a bit of a hill, don't miss the chance to stay here!
We did a few trips away from town: to Lucerne and up Stanserhorn; to the Heidi House; to Liechtenstein; to the waterfall from Weesen; And we did a hike from the top of the chairlift to the Speer peak!
