It's a cute hostel that left intact as much of the original building as possible, with both ryokan-style rooms and western beds. While the walls are thin (which is hard to retrofit), most guests stick to the quiet hours, and our stay was wonderful. Staff was super friendly and gave us a few tips for Takayama and our next place of visit. Everything was frictionless and procedures were well laid out. Free tea and coffee in the common room, and the shared bathrooms were clean at all times. Due to us extending on short notice, we stayed in two different tatami-style rooms and both had a certain odor which I guess is from the age of the building itself, but was not detrimental to our stay here.

When we checked in, we did it wth staff working remotely. I prefer having staff in person. I find human interactions part of a great experience.
Place is few meters away from morning market but need to walk further to reach bus and train stations.
