Le mas de Brel

A hidden gem. The garden is an oasis and we loved the outdoor kitchen. Everything in this home is carefully chosen and Ghislain has great taste. We also shared a nice moment and a bottle of wine listening to the story behind Le Mas de Brel.

Very friendly owner met us with keys and showed us around the properties (we booked both). Charming accommodation, good cooking facilities across the two properties with access to an outdoor cooking area with a microwave and hot plate to cook with. Covered outdoor seating area was very comfortable and the pool, although small was a very welcome addition as we could cool off during some very hot weather. The beds were comfortable and bathrooms fitted out to a high standard. Great base from which to explore the region.

Stairs to one of the (older) property were quite steep and may be a problem for people with mobility or sight issues - not a problem for us though. Communal parking means sometimes one can't park outside the property, but there is a car park a small distance away.

Air conditioned rooms were welcome - it was very hot. Parking not a problem. Wi-Fi easy to connect to and literally available throughout the properties (We hired both gites). Cooking facilities were good (particularly in gite 1) and there is an outdoor kitchen, complete with hotplate, griddle, microwave and washing up facilities alongside the covered outdoor lounge area. The pool, although small, is a lovely addition in which to cool off in the hot summer sun. Our host, Ghislain, could not do too much for us, he was always on hand when we needed him, but never intrusive. He is rightly very proud of his property and is more than happy to share details of the history of the place, this was very welcome and added some colour to the very interesting buildings. About 100 metres away there is a bakery and very small shop. The main town, Uzes, is a 10 minute drive away and is really picturesque and welcoming. We would recommend visiting the local museum (the 1900) - you can walk to it in about 20 minutes on the newly laid cycle path, as it has a really interesting collection of exhibits, with numerous photo opportunities and unusually, some exhibits with which you are encouraged to interact.

You need to be pretty mobile to negotiate the steps to Gite 2, they are steep and quite narrow - it's a very old property, built in the 1600s so, there's going to be some compromises. It would have been nice to have had a washing machine in the properties - Ghislain did take our washing and do it for us, but it did feel like a bit of an imposition.
