Standing out among these treasures is Como, the capital and main urban center of the western branch of the lake. Como is a very beautiful, elegant, romantic and well-kept city, surrounded by medieval walls that house the historic center, with cobbled streets and magnificent squares. Very elegant is the lakefront with several 18th-century villas and the Tempio Voltiano. Among the most famous are Villa Olmo, a fine example of neoclassical architecture and the site of important exhibitions, and "La Rotonda," a villa built at the end of the 18th century and the seat of the Provincial Administration. Near the lakefront is the city's main square, dominated by the Broletto (the old municipal palace built in 1215). The square also houses the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, one of the most fascinating examples of Italian Gothic art.
