In the western part, just 12 kilometres from Pazin, lies the fantastic medieval Pazin Castle (Kastel) 130 metres above the cliff where the Pazinica River flows into the Pazin Pit: This is the setting for the novel Mathias Sandorf by the famous French writer Jules Verne, which was published in 1885. Nowadays there is a Jules Verne Club in Pazin, and Jules Verne Days are organised every year at the end of June.
