Het was erg ruim.

A really excellent location and a very good price for the space that we got. The room was really well equipped with a decent amount of kitchen equipment, a small balcony to air things (in my case, the excessive number of air fresheners) and a washer-dryer. The host was very responsive to our messages and seemed really lovely, although we never met in person as all the door codes etc were provided by email. The place was spotlessly clean and we were generally happy with the apartment and what it offered us for the three nights that we stayed.

I really struggled to sleep on the first night, with eyes itching and feeling really uncomfortable. I thought maybe the room was stuffy but in the morning I was still feeling a bit unwell and my eyes were swollen. At this point, I realised there was a very strong-smelling air freshener right by the bed so I removed it and left it on the balcony. When we returned in the evening, I could still smell the strong perfume in the air and discovered another, similar air freshener in the bathroom. At bedtime, there was still an unpleasant chemical smell and I realised there was a third one near the front door. All this in one small apartment is too much - I really don’t get why there were so many. The place didn’t smell bad so they weren’t needed. I’m not usually sensitive to these things but slept better the other nights and without any allergic reaction so don’t know what else it could have been. The other thing we found difficult was the raised section in the middle of the room. I am used to Japanese apartments having a step up into the room, so that you leave shoes in the lower part, but the room had a step back down on the other side of what I started calling “the catwalk”, with the beds and living room on the other side, on a bare concrete floor. . I could not work out why the room didn’t just stay at one level. With the two double beds so close together, there were several times that we tripped where the bottom of the bed didn’t quite reach this space. No major injuries but it just felt unsafe. This also impacted on the room’s soundproofing. Every time someone moved a chair in the floor above, it would scrape loudly on their concrete floor and this would be heard in our room. This isn’t a problem until you have a group using the room who stay up really late, as our neighbours did on Saturday night. Fortunately, we had earplugs (and the apartment also provide them if you don’t!)

No hooks on wall to hang towels in kitchen or bathroom, no small table by sofa.
