The Castello Ducale Cantelmo, a ruined 11th century castle on the slopes of Monte Morrone, towers over the small town of Popoli in the Majella National Park and the province of Pescara. The castle was built for defence and guarding, primarily to protect the gorges around Popoli from intruders and foreigners and to guard the abbey church of San Clemente a Casauria, which dates back to 871. It has a triangular ground plan. Tidolfo, the bishop of Valva, had the complex built in the period 10001015, but it was remodelled at the end of the 15th century by the feudal lords of Cantelmo from 1269 to the end of the 17th century.
