We recently stayed at the Outlook Inn on Orcas Island and unfortunately had one of the most frustrating hotel experiences we’ve encountered—especially disappointing given the price point and promise of the property. To start with the positives: the hotel is in a lovely location, and the grounds are charming. The on-site restaurant serves decent fare—fairly standard but enjoyable. Our initial room was clean, but the layout was strange, with bedroom sinks, poor-quality laminate flooring that appeared bowed and water-damaged, and an incredibly uncomfortable mattress. We quickly decided we wanted to upgrade and saw online that other rooms were available. However, when we approached the front desk, we were told no upgrades were available—even after showing them the listings. We asked about availability for the following nights and were again told no, though it later became clear this wasn’t accurate. The real issue began with the noise. A loud A/C unit clanged and banged right outside the window, followed by delivery trucks arriving between 2:30 and 5:30 a.m. Sleep was nearly impossible. When we looked online again, we found rooms available in the newer West Wing. This time, we were told we’d have to go through the third-party booking site, which was baffling since hotels typically allow guests to pay directly for upgrades. We spent over four hours trying to coordinate between the third-party vendor and the hotel. The vendor said the hotel denied the request, while the hotel claimed they hadn’t received anything. After several more back-and-forths, the hotel finally acknowledged there were rooms available but still insisted they couldn’t do anything without third-party approval. Out of exhaustion, we eventually booked the newer room directly—now paying over $600 per night. The West Wing room was significantly better: clean, spacious, and with a lovely view. But again, it ended there. We were woken up early again the next morning by stomping from the room above, crying from the room next door, and slamming doors outside. Soundproofing appears to be nonexistent. Throughout the stay, the staff was friendly but frequently expressed frustration with a new system that limits their ability to make changes or upgrades—a fact that left us wondering why we, as guests, were stuck dealing with the consequences of poor internal software. In short, the Outlook Inn has potential, but the experience is not aligned with the premium pricing. Sleep quality, guest support, and booking flexibility all fell far below expectations. For the price, guests deserve a seamless and peaceful stay—something we did not receive. I would not recommend this property unless serious improvements are made to management, communication, and guest accommodations.
