I stayed at the Carlton Park Hotel on a Saturday night with my wife and her brother. We booked a family room which had a double bed and a single bed, and for the price, it wasn’t too bad. The hotel is a bit outdated, but for a quick and affordable stay, it did the job.
When we first walked into the room, there was a bit of an odd smell, but it wasn’t anything unbearable, and we got used to it. The room was also really hot when we arrived, with the radiators cranked up to the max. I’ve seen some past reviews mention cold rooms, so maybe they were trying to compensate for that. Once we turned down the heat and opened the window, the temperature was more comfortable.
The bathroom was clean, and the shower worked just fine. It wasn’t anything luxurious, but it got the job done. The bed itself was okay—comfortable enough for the night—but the pillows were a bit flat, and there was only one per person, which wasn’t ideal.
The view from our window was a little disappointing, though. Looking out across the garden, we could see a window that was falling apart and some wood stacked nearby, which didn’t really add to the aesthetic of the place.
That being said, for the price we paid, it wasn’t a disaster. The TV worked fine, and it was a decent, no-frills place to crash for the night. If you’re just looking for an affordable layover or somewhere to sleep for the night, this place works. I've stayed at much more expensive hotels that offered the same level of comfort, so I was pleasa

Overall very good value. The room was clean, however there was no toilet roll, the toilet had dirty marks in the water part of the toilet.
There was a big wheelie bin sitting in the disabled parking when I arrived which meant I needed to park slightly further away.
The staff at check-in were helpful but I had messaged the hotel 3 times before I arrived and I never received a response.

Upon arrival the first thing that struck me was how shabby the exterior of the building looked. The doorway we headed to was indeed boarded up! It looked incredibly dated.
After entering through a different doorway we were facing the reception where the hotel receptionist took some details and gave us our key.
Our room was first floor. Upon entering our twin bedded room the first thing that struck me was the small size, this followed immediately by the smell of cigarettes and what i can only describe as a musty odour.
The decor in the room was incredibly dated, the windows were filthy, the furniture was tatty, and the wallpaper looked damp. Not great at all. The bathroom was awful. Mould around the shower head, around the taps, around the bath etc. Looking into the toilet i was greeted with, nasty looking stains. I did my best to not touch the shower curtain at all.
On a slight positive the bed linen looked ok. Only one pillow however.
The tea making facilities were basic, though one of the cups were dirty. In hindsight i should of demaded another room or full refund following all of the negatives.
Some friends joined us for our last day. They were given a room on the ground floor and were only staying for one night.
They were greeted by a worse situation than ours!
The carpet in places was actually damp, with black mould, one wall in particular was wet, wallpaper peeling. They even had mould on the bed sheets!
Trully horrific, i'll never forget this hotel. Disgusti

The Carlton Park hotel used to be a grand place, but it has clearly fallen on hard times. That is reflected in almost every aspect of the place. I had to write a list of the issues we had because there were too many, split into outright bad and nice-to-haves.
Bad
- The 'secure' door to the rooms corridor was never secure
- the WiFi regularly cut in and out, and was not particularly fast
- The room was unclean, dust all over, bathroom tiles were grubby, not fully vacuumed
- shower sprays past the shower door soaking the bathroom, and the fan can't keep up with moisture. The temperature control also couldn't go cold enough.
- walks are paper thin. We could hear our neighbours TV on all night.
- the windows couldn't open, but we somehow still smelled cigarette smoke from time to time - through the walls?!
Nice to haves:
- pillows were far too thin, would have needed extras
- duvet was rubbish but manageable
- half the place is old, worn but grand. The other half is cheap replacements which look tatty.
The worst part is the Brentwood hotel right next door does all of the above without issue, and for only very little extra cost!
This place was not suitable for us as a couple visiting family. Despite booking for 2 nights we only stayed the 1. I would not recommend staying here unless you're looking for a cheap stop for working travel, and even then I would hesitate.

Around 30+ years ago I went to a wedding here. It was quite a salubrious and luxurious hotel. Possibly the best and poshest in the area.
Skip forward 30 years, it was quite sad to see the decline of this once majestic hotel. There were signs of its once style as when you enter the hotel to reception you see polished marble floors and a grand piano.
However, you’re greeted, in the foyer, with piped piano music that is reminiscent of something you hear in a chapel of rest. You barely see a fellow guest and the ambience deserted corridors left me fearing that Jack Nicholson would pop round the corner screaming ‘Here’s Johnny.’
What guests you do see, are possible housed there under provisions of emergency housing from the local council. A couple of guests were regularly smoking in the foyer entrance which resulted in walking through a haze of stale smoke to get into the entrance.
My room was dated which seemed to have the decor of the 1980s, which again had thinking of the set of the Shinning. Only one pillow on the bed, I’m fussy for two pillow comfort.
The breakfast was advertised as £6.99 for a continental, but seeing pictures, I didn’t fancy just cornflakes, an apple and toast so I gave this a miss and got a breakfast meal deal, £3.60, a Costa coffee, a large fruit punnet and a croissants from the nearby Tesco Express.
On the positive side, what little staff there were, they were pleasant, polite and attentive. The room was very clean and the quite comfy.

On arrival walking from the car park to reception there was a strong smell of drugs. Reception was cold and uninviting. The corridor had a strong smell of drugs. The room had an unpleasant smell and the shower temperature had been lodged in position so you could not change it, at best the water was lukewarm. Coffee facilities but no spoons and the curtains were so thin we were awake by 5 as the room was so bright

Appealing and still waiting on a refund, hotel is used for immigrants. Dirty, mouldy, filth carpets, glass smears, wet bathroom floor.

We had no bath plug or shower curtain either, they did come quickly to put the shower curtain in, but we still had no bath plug. We then had to be moved to another room from a twin to a large double, due to the room we were in which had a bug infestation all over the beds and at the back of the beds all up the wall.
There were people hanging around at the front of the hotel smoking naughty substances.
We were promised a free nights stay for the inconvenience but I am yet to recieve a call or email to confirm it.

Nice reception area but a bit lifeless. Good size rooms. Did ask for extra pillows but the didn't arrive! Easy free parking.

The door to the room had obviously been damaged before preventing auto closure. Wall paper peeling off the wall. TV didn’t work properly. Disturbance at 11:30pm with shouting and bang on a door and calls to contact police. Eventually settled down but not without disturbing sleep.

DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL: I found out about the gym and pool and bar services when checking in which was disappointing but having arrived late I didn't have time to find another hotel that night. After several complaints about the Internet not working and the TV Not accepting my firestick the managers offered a free night accommodation, I refused this as I didn't want to stay there again, they then promised some money back and after several attempts to get this sorted including a return visit to the property they promised to ring me back after talking to the owner, I still haven't heard anything. Unacceptable customer service for a hotel and a blatant disregard about genuine complaints.

Very poor. Stains over the walls, peeling wallpaper, very tired and old. Hotel appeared to be shared with non paying guests from local services. These people were smoking at the front entrance constantly and could be heard shouting and swearing at staff

Just awful 😞 a large empty car park except for one car and a smashed glass bar door covered up with a piece of plywood greeted you when you drove in. It spoke volumes really. We checked in which was pleasant enough by a helpful young man, and checked out again 5 minutes later.
Not a good sign when the cleaning team were still cleaning the bedrooms at 4.30pm. But the main thing was the overwhelming smell of the corridors and the rooms was enough to make your eyes water and you could still smell it long after you had left. A heady combination of Jeys fluid and a woody 1960s hippy joss sticks aroma. Made you feel quite sick and headachy to be honest. There was no escape, it was everywhere.
On folding back the duvet there was brownish paper flecks (?) on the white sheet, no idea what they were.
Then in one of the dressing table draws there was drugs paraphernalia, used cigarette ends, shreds of baccy, one random playing card and white powder residue 😱 we shut the drawer and decide to check out of there.
When we told the young guy on reception, he was most apologetic and offered us to change bedrooms to some downstairs, but we politely declined and we’re heading towards the door by this point.
We were looking forward to our stay there but it just wasn’t for us. The owners had really tried but I think it’s a continuous money pit for them.
It might be cheap if you are watching the pennies and want somewhere to crash for the night, but definitely not cheerful.

The 'hotel' is not really fit for regular visitors. We appeared to be the only 'guests'- there were a few, very poorly dressed Asian men around who clearly spoke no English. Breakfast ( which we declined) was white sliced bread, some sort of butter- substitute spread and a PGtips T bag. We were told there was a kettle in the corner. It was all extremely odd. All other facilities- bar, fitness room etc were decaying behind closed doors.
On the plus side, the 2 male staff members who dealt with us were pleasant, polite and brought us extra pillows, towels and a blanket. Possibly these should have been provided in the first place. The bed was reasonably comfortable and the room fairly clean- though had clearly sen better days. No hairdryer, no glasses- just very, very basic.
I would advise caution to anyone thinking of staying there. We only stayed our 4 nights as we had a relative close by so only used the room to sleep.

Good location. Very good staff.

The hotel was terrible. It was dirty, the sink had not been cleaned and the towels had stains on them. The door would not close without slamming it leading to the wall being damaged. The draw was broken also.
There was also a constant stop and start vibration noise which woke me at 6:30am and was so irritating I could not sleep.
The hotel was cheap however this does not justify it being dirty and having damages.
Awful place, would never stay there again!!

Decor is a little bit tired, mostly clean although the shower head hadn't been cleaned in a long while. Staff were pleasant and helpful but have the air of someone that had been dragooned in to manning the desk due to wearing tracksuit bottoms and a puffer jacket. Quite quiet, and the bed was comfortable. Tea, coffee and kettle in the room. WiFi and mobile reception was not good. It was fine for my needs and I slept well.

Room was clean & tidy. Other than checking in never saw anyone. Would have been good to know is housing asylum seekers. No bar or breakfast

Unfortunately we decided not to stay the night , on returning to the hotel at 11 ISH there was a group of people in a huddle that looked like they were taking drugs and on entering the corridor near our room there were drugged up people wandering around like zombies , this is obviously a half way house for homeless people and should not be selling rooms to public , avoid if possible

The hotel building is in obvious need of renovation but our family room was warm and clean. The beds were comfortable. We just wanted somewhere to shower and sleep so it suited our needs and we were not disturbed by noise. We did not want corn flakes for breakfast so we went to Morrisons and had a full English for £6 .

Youths hanging around in a car in the car park for hours.
I use Hotel.com all the time and would recommend you do use this hotel.
