Moe and Jo’s Haus at the Rocking MJ Ranch has a history as unique as the Texas Hill Country

A charming, secluded cabin awaits you tucked amidst live oak trees that have stood for generations on this Tex-German Hill Country ranch. This unique cabin echoes another time. In fact, it was modeled after the officers’ quarters of the Texas Frontier forts.

Its simple appointments and roomy bedrooms provide comfort during your stay. You will enjoy your time here watching the deer and birds who feed near the cabin. Watch the sunset from the comfortable porches or make the most of all that the New Braunfels area has to offer. The cabin is conveniently located near the crystal blue waters of the Guadalupe River and Canyon Lake and all of its Amenities.

While we can only imagine where the Apache and later Comanche tribal groups may have camped on the Rocking MJ Ranch -- the presence of arrowheads indicates that they hunted and stayed on this land at one time. For the last 120 years, the ranch has been in the Jonas/Schwab family. Historically, the ranch was used as grazing land for Hereford cattle and a hard-scrabble home for Angora, and later, Spanish and Boer goats.

Around the turn of the twentieth century, the ranch had been home to a cedar chopper family who “sharecropped” cedar in exchange for rent to live on the Rocking MJ Ranch. In fact, some of the cedar posts that hold up the front and back porches of Moe and Jo’s Haus came from trees that surrounded the dirt-floor “lean-to” home of that cedar chopper family.

The most dynamic features of the ranch are the scrub live oaks, cedar lined ravines and steppe-like limestone and caliche uplifts, and friendly yard ornaments Tex and Rex the Longhorn Cattle who reside at the ranch.

Moe and Jo’s Haus is named for the previous owners, the parents of the current owners. Moe and Jo Schwab were the fourth generation of the Jonas/Schwab family to own this picturesque place. They ranched and tended this Hill Country ranch for more than 60 years. It’s now open to couples and families for a retreat and relaxing vacation.

You will never forget your stay at this cozy cabin in one of the most beautiful parts of Texas.

First the gate needs to be repaired so the gate code opens it. Not fun getting off my Harley on both side of gate to open and close it!

We had a wonderful stay at Mo & Jo’s Haus. We come to Hill Country annually to visit friends and have stay at many other B & B’s by Wimberley. This was so much better than any place we have stayed in the past. We loved the rural location of no people neighbors just nature. The longhorns were a fun addition as they greet us when we arrive. We did not see much of them after that unfortunately. The kitchen is basic with few essential supplies (i.e if you are cooking get foil, condiments, supplies, etc). Sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee just listening to the birds and watch wildlife was the perfect start to each morning. Ending the day on rocking chairs was perfect, even when there was some rain as we were under a cover porch. Looking forward to staying here again. Easy access to every place for day trips around the area. It is truly a gem if you are looking for some quiet rest and relaxation.

The place is nice but the following are things to know. Visitors are likely to be older and exhausted when arriving in an unknown place.1) You gave a gate code. The keypad is disconnected and doesn't work. So, instant confusion. 2) Finding the house was hard. It turns out there is a sign but it's currently unreadable! Put up new sign at road to cabin. The keycode to door didn't work. More frustration. The contact person was nice and helpful---but I shouldn't have needed to call them. Finally, repair the flapper valve(s) in toilet(s). The first thing I had to do was field repair toilet tank in east bedroom area because the flapper is shot. The water has sulfur in it and is corrosive. Rebuild tank parts in both baths to avoid trouble. I liked the place once I finally found it and got things in order.
