Departamento Mazatlán

I spent the better part of a month at Departamento Mazatlán, so I'm well placed to evaluate the accommodations and the neighborhood! It was an enjoyable stay with good facilities. You're close to a major highway, but quite well insulated from noise (ground floor). The immediate neighborhood is very pleasant -- normal middle-class Mexican. I enjoyed strolling the quiet streets in the late afternoon or early evening; it's very safe and secure. There is a large Ley supermarket/department store only three blocks south, and lots of little corner stores, including one just outside the front door which sells (fridge by the counter) freshly prepared dishes like pozole, cochinita pibil, chicken salad, etc. Good for quick self-catering, as there is only one decent restaurant in the vicinity, a seafood place on the way to Ley. The historic center is a 25-minute bus ride -- look for the Alarcon route, across the road from the apartment. Alarcon or Sirena routes will bring you back. Fares are 12.50 pesos at the time of writing. Communication with the host, Roxana, was excellent. The apartment is clean, large, with a tiny patio past the bedroom. (We moved the table and chairs indoors for dining.) Bathroom and hot water are fine, allow 3 minutes for the hot. Internet is solid in the living-room area, weaker in the bedroom. Kitchen facilities are adequate though a bit light on pans/dishware. Cleaning is provided once a week for longer stays. A good deal!

See above for a couple of minutes drawbacks, but this is a very good option if you don't mind being among friendly locals in the 'burbs, some distance from downtown.
