About this house rental

About this space
Welcome to Amish Country. Enjoy the picturesque countryside in the comfort of a converted Amish home and working farm, just outside of Middlebury, home of the famous Essenhaus Restaurant and Bakery and few short miles from Shipshewana.
Rest and refuge are awaiting you after a fun filled day in the countryside.
The space
My hope when you visit Freedom Farm is that you find this home peaceful and reminiscent of a simpler time.
Enjoy a cup of coffee on the front porch as you watch the buggies go by.
Bring the whole family and spend time baking and laughing in the large farmhouse kitchen.
While you're here consider a drive to Shipshewana to visit the shops or take in a show.
Coming this spring you will find calves, baby chicks and a vegetable garden to enjoy. Welcome!
Guest access
Freedom Farm includes a convenient parking area right outside the fence in the front of the property.
The entire fenced area is for you to enjoy. However pets (dogs only) and small children should be supervised as the porch area is not completely secure. Maximum of 2 dogs. There is a one-time time fee of $75 for pets that is required at time of booking.
It is at the bottom of the VRBO reservation page.
The front door access is equipped with a coded entry system. The code will be sent to you on your day of arrival.
There is an outbuilding that houses yard games such as cornhole and bochi ball for your pleasure.
A firepit for a sunset weenie roast or smores awaits just outside the fence line in back.
You are welcome to visit the calves and chicks coming this spring or pick a few veggies from the garden for your meals.
Adults must supervise children at the barns for their safety.
The basement property and separate driveway is reserved for the owners family.
Other things to note
Freedom Farm was an Amish home for many years. In order to make it comfortable for the "English" electricity, air/heat and wifi have been added. The kitchen configuration did not allow for a dishwasher so a large farmhouse sink was added to make dishwashing quick and easy.
This beautiful home proved to have its challenges to bring it into the 21st century and it does have a few charming quirks but I believe you will find your stay at Freedom Farm relaxing and equipped with everything you need.
~ Michele

Inviting home with thoughtful extra touches. Easily reachable for visitors to Middlebury or Shipshewana. Comfortable beds and furniture, and fresh baked bread and jam! Cows on the right, horses and chickens on the left. A perfect country getaway.

We loved freedom farm. It was very peaceful. Kids loved seeing the horse and carriages go by and the lightning bugs come out at night.

My sisters and I thouroughly enjoyed our stay at this immaculate farmhouse. It was a blazing hot weekend and we arrived to a cool house with a fresh loaf of bread waiting for us. The air conditioning worked great the entire time we were there and it was really hot. The house is clean, nicely decorated, spacious and close to Shipshewana and great Amish food. It is on a road that can be busy at times, but sits back far enough that we enjoyed sitting on the porch watching the horse and buggies go by and we weren't bothered by the traffic.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Michelle‘s. This house was clean and convenient and certainly reminiscent of a time long past however it had all the modern amenities you could want. The outside was especially charming with the cows and chickens, plus all the horses and buggies that went by. There are many places to see and eat of different varieties within just a short drive of this hole. We would gladly stay there again and thank Michelle and her daughter for being such gracious hosts.

The home exceeded our expectation. It was spacious, beautifully decorated, comfortable, 12 minute drive to everything, the kitchen was amazing and we had plenty of space to chill out here er we wanted. Was stocked with almost everything we needed. My small dogs really enjoyed it as well! We would definitely stay here again. Some notes for critical people looking to stay here:-dog people: the fence has a large gap underneath in some spots. About 10 inches(maybe) where your dog could slip under if an escape artist. My dogs are 20-25lbs and didn’t, but could have got under if they really wanted to (my heart fluttered a few time when they tried to chase buggies). They did a good job securing everything else. This is also clearly listed in the listing.- inside the house is very quiet, but if your dream is sitting on the porch drinking your wine:coffee, the car traffic/buggy traffic is very loud at times and not ideal for those seeking peace and quiet outside. Again, inside you will hear none of this. - the water does have a sulfur smell at times and you have to wash dishes with low pressure. BUT YOU ARE IN AN AMISH HOUSE! This was not an issue for us, but we are used to the Midwest :) Overall, I highly recommend to stay here. It’s beautifully thought out and we felt so at home here. The host was communicative and really thought out the details for her guests. We loved our trip.

My hubby has never been to Shipshewana and wondered why I like to come so often, so I booked Freedom Farm for the weekend of the gun show, because it's not all about me.Micheles home was just beautiful and is decorated in a way that makes you feel calm from the moment you step in. We would definitely come back.My only disappointment was that i didn't get to use the kitchen but I vowed not to do any cooking and although we are not people who usually enjoy going out to eat, her suggestions were very good and we did not leave hungry.Thank you!

Was a great place to stay. Very pretty and the host thought of almost everything (need a wine bottle opener) . Only drawbacks are that there’s no dishwasher so everything has to be hand washed and the water in the bathroom has an unpleasant smell. Was worried about picking up the smell when showering.
