Mas de Baubesse: Paradise in Provence

If you want a place that's sterile, filled with Ikea furniture, and has a minimum of amenities this isn't the place for you. But, if you prefer a place that has character, where you can linger, you should consider Mas de Baubesse. This former home of an artist/painter is full of personal art and objets. It has an expansive library, and a massive fireplace for cool evenings. While full of rustic charm, the property doesn't lack necessary amenities. The kitchen is fully modern, well equipped for cooking at home, and conveniently stocked with spices and condiments. As for food and groceries, Mausanne, a small town a couple miles away offers all the fresh food and sundries you would need. Perhaps it's strongest aspect is it's setting. It's a converted farmhouse tucked into a valley a half mile from Les Baux. The limestone outcrops of Les Alpilles provide a dramatic backdrop to the house and it's outstanding pool. If you are into hiking, this house is a dream. No need to drive to a trailhead. You just need to walk to the end of the driveway and immediately you have access to a network of trails that crisscross Les Alpilles. Go for a hike, come back and dive in the pool. Before our trip, I had an extensive list of towns in Provence we wanted to see. But after we arrived the place was so pleasant we decided it would be better to relax and enjoy the house--a testament in and of itself.
