The Original Camp Agafay - Restaurant, Fire Show and Pool

The ‘OG’! We loved the Original Camp Agafay - perfect for the children, with great on site activities like quads, a beautiful pool and the camels (we loved Zorro and Pablo!). The highlight (other than watching the sun go down from the hill top next to the camp) was the evening dinner and fire show. Delicious 4 course traditional meal (was even eaten by our quite fussy children!), and wonderful music and entertainment. Everyone was dancing, and the ‘fire man’ at the end was a perfect finale (fireworks on legs!). The manager/owner was a real gentleman, looked after us so well, even upgrading us to an awesome tent suite (perfect for a family of 5), and all of his team made us feel so at home. A real highlight of the holiday! Transfers were easy, and comfortable.

Nothing! What’s not to love about the peacefulness of being out in the desert!

Everything, the owner was the best person to welcome us to the desert. The facilities are what you expect in the desert, but the people and their staff man they went above and beyond always for us.

I loved everything about this stay. We had our 9 month old and 4 year old and could’ve stayed an extra couple nights if we didn’t have other plans.

The genuinely kind staff and cared-for animals were the only saving grace.

The Original Camp, Agafay — Luxury in the Marketing, Not in the Experience. The Original Camp promises a luxurious desert escape, authentic Moroccan dining and attentive hospitality. Our three-night family stay exposed a stark gap between that polished image and reality. Our complimentary “suite upgrade” had broken windows, a damaged toilet seat, dirty showers, exposed electrics and unreliable hot water. Two of the three beds had no linen. Our room was never serviced; towels and toilet paper were not replenished. Dining was just as poor. Breakfast was identical each morning, and food ran out on the third day. Plates and glasses were often unavailable. We paid €280 for three evenings of dining after repeatedly communicating our vegetarian requirements. On the first evening, no vegetarian meal was provided; the second brought vegetable couscous; the third, carrots and cold aubergine. The same lukewarm soup appeared each night, followed by uninspired desserts of a small plate of fruit. This was hardly a showcase for Morocco’s extraordinary culinary heritage. The activities raised further concerns. Of approximately ten dune buggies, only two appeared operational, and one had a serious front-axle fault. The price was €400 for two hours, described as a “special price, brother”. The condition of the equipment was shocking. We also prepaid €100 for a camel ride for four, although only two participated after our son became unwell. No adjustment was offered, though none was requested. Bar prices appeared to change daily without explanation too. Guests staying for a single sunset, dinner and night may notice less. Over three nights, however, the lack of maintenance, organisation and investment is impossible to ignore. Luxury is not what you promise in photographs. It is what you deliver after the photographs have been taken. The staff and animals deserve better. So do the guests.
