Because of its deep and sheltered harbour, salt beds, and productive shellfish beds, the nearby mediaeval town of Newtown was declared a "Free Town" in 1256. The only National Nature Reserve on the island, Newtown is a great place for history buffs, hikers, animal lovers, and anyone looking to relax in a stunning natural setting. It is possible to go on an estuary safari from Shalfleet Manor all the way to the Newtown estuary, where you can see a wide variety of birds, plants, and other wildlife. Shalfleet also has a farm shop, village stores, and an off-licence in addition to its award-winning gastro pub and off-licence. Definitely a top-notch holiday destination.
