About this house rental

A beautiful historic villa that faces south towards the Dordogne River, called "Domaine de la Croix de St Michel". Built of Bordeaux stone in the 18th century, the Domaine has been lovingly restored recently. The main house has six bedrooms, four bathrooms, two living rooms and two kitchens. The seventh bedroom is in the pretty eighteenth century pigeonnier. There is a sunny pool, almost two acres of lawns leading down to the neighbour's vineyard, and "the Grange", an old stone barn in which the Domaine's wine used to be made.

The Domaine is on the outskirts of Bourg, a pretty riverside village set amongst vineyards with restaurants, shops and an excellent supermarket. The mediaeval city of Bordeaux is 15 miles to the south. St Emilion, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with ancient streets and Romanesque churches, is 45 minutes away. Bordeaux airport can be reached in 35 minutes.

Fourteen solar panels and an electric car charger seek to reduce the climate impact of this beautiful old house.

We chose this beautiful property after searching many within an hour of Bordeaux because of the number of bedrooms & bathrooms & the lovely large communal kitchen. The property is very easy to find & communications with the owner & the property Manager were absolutely fantastic. They gave concise & detailed instructions about the property & lots of information for places to visit & eat in Bourg & the surrounding areas. The facilities at the property were perfect for our needs. The weather wasn't great when we stayed so didn't actually use the pool. We did use the BBQ a couple of times & ate alfresco for most of our meals. The kitchen is well equipped, like a home from home. We slept in the sumptuous master bedroom with an enormous en-suite, including a large walk-in shower & separate bath. The steps down were tricky for my aging knees when I had to make a night time trip to the loo, but the luminescent strips on each step aided my journey. Not too sure about no door on the en-suite though?! Bourg itself is very quiet but has a wonderful Boulangerie & Carrefour within walking distance or a very short drive away. Our party took a walk into town to explore & found it to be quite sleepy with most shops closed, as unfortunately we went at lunch time (ish). It was still a pleasant walk through the town and down by the river. We had a lovely meal at Le Bouchon de Bourg on our last evening. The staff were very accommodating of our limited French. We recommend this property :-)

Pleasant surprise when everything looks even better in reality than on the pictures; Rooms more spacious, huge kitchen, modern bathrooms and beautiful pool & garden. The owner has made a incredibly detailed and well written guide of things to do, which is hugely helpful. Special thanks to the manager James who really makes an effort the have things run smoothly. Great stay

What can I say apart from fantastic from start to finish. The communication before we arrived, giving us ideas of things to do was a great help to plan ahead and make sure we covered everything we wanted to do. James meeting us and running through the workings of the house for the stay, and communication was first class all along. The house is truly lovely, and allowed us to have a lovely peaceful break. The house having two parts was great, and worked putting the kids one side. The pool was brilliant and was well used each day for many hours by the 9 of us staying across the week, ranging from 9 to 78. The house is well positioned for day trips, St Emillion was idyllic, Dune de Pilat was spectacular, the many Chateau’s and vineyards for wine tasting, say no more. A day trip to Bordeaux - best to do the park and ride and get the tram into the centre as makes it a lot easier. We went to the wine museum which was great for all ages and wine tasting on the 8th floor with great views of the city, the museum also had a Picasso exhibition, which was great and enjoyed by all. A truly lovely house that made the break even more special.

We had a family gathering at this historic villa on the outskirts of the town of Bourg. We had 13 members ranging in age from 10 to 75. We had an absolutely wonderful time in spite of the heat. The pool was perfect for hot afternoons. The property manager secured additional fans for us to use which made the heat (above 100 on several days) bearable. In the newer section of the villa there is always a lovely breeze from the west. The older portion of the villa with 3 bedrooms was quite warm, but we managed. The kitchen was well equipped and we prepared several wonderful meals cooking inside and using the new grill outside - feeding 13 is a big task! There was plenty of space inside and outside to spread out or join in with the group. It was an easy walk to the local Boulangerie and we went every morning for croissants, pain chocolate and baggettes. I miss that wonderful bread! There is a farmers market in the town square on Sunday mornings which has a great selection of foods. Several wineries are close by. It was a perfect location. We took side trips to St. Emilion, Bordeaux, and Blaye and the nearby caves of Pair - non-Pair. Our favorite excursion was to the Chateau Monconseil - Gazin for a day of escape room fun, wine olympiad fun, a tour of the winery and a delicious lunch. The family were wonderful and we had so much fun with the escape room and olympiad. I cannot say enough about how helpful the property manager, James McGivern was. He responded quickly to any questions and was just terrific about anything we needed. We would definitely recommend this historic villa!
