You will believe it only when you see it! While the photos posted here provide a glimpse of the beauty, nothing compares to seeing the nearly 360 degrees of panoramas in person! This house sits standing watch at the top of a mountain, at an altitude of over 3200 feet, above the town of Atenas overlooking the great western valley that extends all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Located as it is at 'Heaven's doorstep', it has the most astonishing views found in Central America available right out of your living room, day or night. Not only can you see the Costa Rican lush (possessing all conceivable shades of green!) rainforest from most of the perimeter of the property, but can also take in the Pacific coast and ocean from your pool. Enjoy your very own private garden teeming with wildlife, vivid tropical flora and fruit trees including avocado, lemon, mango, banana, plantain, guava, coffee and other exotic delicacies. Watch and listen to the local wild birds as they sing and flit from tree to tree in the grove behind the house. (You'll be astounded at how close the little chicks get when they pay you a visit at the pool during one of Costa Rica's gentle rains.) Enjoy the soothing breezes from your hammock in the front of the house, or in the house’s unique reading room which allows you, while staying indoors, to enjoy the cross wind that comes up one side of the mountain and down the other. The house, which sleeps four to six people* (see below for details*), is itself an architectural marvel. The striking wrought iron winding staircase and railings naturally draw your eyes to the dramatic twenty-foot-high wood ceilings in the main house. The kitchen’s silver and gold-veined marble counters invite you to join your other guests to sit and share in a meal or cocktails. The open design of the reading room, with its large windows that make you feel like you are outside while still indoor, provides a road map to relaxation. Excellently appointed throughout, the house’s two bedrooms and three bathrooms are, likewise, marked by impressive attention to detail as evidenced by exquisite marble and wood finishes, and finely crafted furniture and fixtures.
**** We request that groups booking a stay at our property numbering over four individuals rent the casita in the back of the property in addition to the main house. Please note that access to the casita which you can see in some of the photos of the back of the property is NOT automatically granted to rentals of groups of four or less guests. The casita can be rented for a Flat Fee of $350.00 per booking - regardless of the length of stay. Groups numbering six or more guests are, without exceptions, required to rent the casita in addition to the main villa. ***
We suggest that our guests sample the following at least one evening during their stay with us: try the Jacuzzi while turning the outside lights off. On a cloudless night this will prove to be a truly transcendental experience. The beauty of the nighttime sky at our location on the mountaintop is striking. You will swear you can just stretch your hand and touch the ancient astronomers’ celestial sphere. (A sneak preview can be seen in one of our posted photos.) It’s one way to find out why we are named The House Next To Heaven.
A five minute drive to Atenas, but also, given its central location in the country, it is close to most of the main attractions in Costa Rica: including its volcanoes, butterfly gardens, rainforests equipped with canopy tours and zip lines waiting for you to explore them and, yes, it’s within driving distance of the famous Pacific coast beaches. Multiple tours in the area allow for boating, white water rafting, hiking, horseback riding, and so much more. For those seeking culture, Escazú (a sophisticated bilingual area of fabulous restaurants, stores, exclusive boutiques, English language bookstores and movies) is also a 45-minute drive away.

As an additional service to our house guests, we offer a fee-based airport pick up and drop-off to help you avoid the potential hassles involved in the transitions into and out of your time in Costa Rica (something to particularly consider when you have night-time travel plans, but a nice comfort to have in any event). We also provide car rentals and tours to all corners of the country, including the Poas and Arenal volcanoes, a 'crocodile tour' to Jaco, a tour to the La Paz Waterfall gardens, and tours custom made to our guests' requests throughout Costa Rica.

As described, it’s a beautiful place to stay. The house is clean and looks just like the pictures. We stayed for 9 days and really enjoyed our time. One thing I would recommend is replacing the shower head in the bathroom with the king bed—the current one isn’t very good.We also lost power in about 90% of the house, and no one was able to tell us where the main breaker panel was located. We spent quite a bit of time searching before finally finding it outside on the wall by the laundry room.Overall, everything worked out and we 100% recommend this house

The view was amazing, and the hot tub was perfect. Communication with Sandra was good from the start—great place to stay.

I preference by saying we throughly enjoyed our trip to Costa Rica. The house however is not as pictured, at least as far as the pool and hot tub are concerned. The pictures on this site were taken some time ago. The pool and hot tub are in need of repair. The pool used to be an infinity pool but is no longer. There are mostly missing tiles in the pool and hot tub and there is a ring of mold where the water rests. The hot tub takes 30-40 minutes to get hot but will eventually get up to hot tub temperature. We did not swim in the pool. I did notify the owner and he says he will make repairs to them in the off season.
There is no air conditioning, which we were aware of but were assured the weather is Atenas is the best in the world. It is cool at night but very muggy. The air does not flow well in the master bedroom so we moved to the room with the double beds. It was cooler in there but as I mentioned still muggy leaving the pillows and bedding damp. If it rains and you have to close the windows it gets sticky and hot. There is a fan. There are bugs that will come in of course because it is a tropical area but you can’t close the windows because there is no air conditioning. Little tip: dryer sheets keep most of the bugs out.
The view is stunning!
Overall if the owner makes the repairs to the pool and adds a portable air unit to the master bedroom I would definitely return to this property! And Bunki Tours was amazing. Definitely use their services!
