The hosts were very kind and to stay in temple lodgings was an unforgettable experience. I feel we understand the culture of the area much better as a result.
It would have been lovely to hear what the food was that we were eating, again for a better understanding. Also my friend is a strict vegetarian and it would have been helpful to know which dishes contain fish.

Truly special place to stay because it’s part of this old religious tradition and thousands of pilgrims to the mountain have stayed here before you. It’s also family owned. The food is unique, and the preparation and presentation is excellent. A pleasant short walk to the hike / mountain itself.
Rooms are pretty basic and the sink in the room has no hot water. Unless you are driving, it’s a bit of a project to get to and from Tsuruoka, and there is nothing to do immediately around the lodging (not even a konbini).
