Hospitality where you feel like a burden

We recently spent a week at Haslehnerhof in Ramsau am Dachstein, lured by the promise of a cozy holiday home in the Alps. What we found, however, was something quite different—an experience so baffling that it could double as a social experiment in how much a guest can tolerate before questioning their life choices. Let’s start with the setting. The house, described as a charming holiday retreat, is indeed next to a barn. Not “near” a barn. Not “with a picturesque view of a barn.” No, it is next to the barn, with its main and only entrance a mere five meters from where the cows clock in for their morning shift. If this was clearly stated in the description, we might have been mentally prepared for the rustic charm. Instead, the moment of realization felt less like checking into a holiday home and more like stepping into a livestock coordination center. The surprises, however, did not end there. Most homes for rent include a common space—a place where families and friends can sit together, talk, maybe enjoy a game or two. Haslehnerhof boldly challenges this concept by ensuring that the only place to gather is your bedroom. You want to sit anywhere else? Good luck. There is a breakfast room, but this is strictly reserved for its royal purpose: serving breakfast and nothing else. After inquiring, we were graciously allowed to use it in the evenings—but only under the strict understanding that the owners needed to be in bed by 8:00 PM. This led to surreal gatherings where we met twice, whispering like a secret society plotting a coup, before deciding it was easier (and less awkward) to just spend every night out—an unexpected, expensive, and frankly unnecessary consequence of booking what was supposedly a holiday home. Then, there was breakfast. Ah, breakfast. A truly predictable experience—identical every single day, with an added twist: progressive rationing.

In case you are in love with cross-country skiing you simply need to go to Haslehnerhof!

We enjoyed our stay from start to finish. Haslehnerhof is a pleasant family place where you find desired peace and rest. On top of that, Kati was really caring and friendly host. Location is literally few meters away from the cross-country skiing tracks which was one the main reasons why we went there. Overall, it was an amazing stay which exceeded our expectations! And yes, breakfasts were gooood :)

Simply everything was perfect and we couldn't have better vacation. Kati was super nice, our room was clean and beautiful. Breakfast were sufficient. Place is really calm with animals around. I have nothing bad to say. See you in winter and thanks for nice staying.

Wenn ich wieder mal in der Umgebung Urlaub mache dann werde ich wieder dort übernachten.

Sehr sehr nette Gastgeberin. Sehr sauberes Zimmer und Bad. Sehr schöne ruhige Lage. Tolles, leckeres Frühstück.
