Sterling & Sage

Hmmm... If I just write what we felt it will sound like a hundred other bogus reviews. Awesome! Amazing! Astounding! Ambience! And that's just the A's. The basics: perfect in every way. Comfort, cleanliness. Huge spacious room (OK, we'd just come from Amtrak so we were a bit biased - the enormous bed was twice the size of our Amtrak Roomette. Yes, just the square footage of the bed.) Western decor, huge comfortable bed. It was more like a "user experience" than a place to sleep/stay. But perfect. Impressive but not ostentatious. Hugely masculine in its way - I've never seen the like of the 4-poster bed - but my wife loved it - not too dark or daunting. Nice Western art. Great carpet made out morning exercises easy, comfortable - didn't need a mat. (And the carpet was clean, fresh). Bathroom and shower were fun and a delight! When have you ever felt that about a bathroom?!? Right now (after we've left) we're staying in a hot spring spa an hour away; the shower in Sterling & Sage was just as good. Really this place was too good for just an overnight stop along the way. We may come back and spend two nights in the room just 'cause of the room. Throw in a ride on the adjacent tourist railroad (worth the trip - I've done it in the past) just to use up the time between the two nights. One time when Tesla first started making cars, the quality was so high that Consumer Reports needed to "fix"/change their rating system 'cause Tesla cars were getting 103 points on a 100-point scale. This room is like that - it resets what I ever thought a room could be. And my wife and I travel quite a lot for fun and we've stayed in many a wonderful room before. In a weird way this room was almost too good. We have thought about offering our own (very nice) house on Airbnb; now that I see how good a room can be, I'm a little hesitant.

Nothing at all wrong. One reviewer had trouble with the two door codes; we didn't. As long as you can read instructions and punch in the numbers, no problem. Similarly, the room is on the second floor and you have to climb one flight of comfortable indoor stairs. That are so neatly decorated that the experience is fun! Check out the handrail which must have cost a thousand bucks just by itself.

Beautiful room and bathroom, with a fantastic view of the C&T scenic railroad yard from a balcony with seating. The room amenities were also great!

The only issue we experienced (very minor) were the bed pillows were a bit thin and uncomfortable.

Convenient location downtown. Close to the Cumbres and Toltec railroad. The room amenities were very good. I wanted to take the bathroom home with me. There is basically a no personal contact approach to checking in/out and uses a totally digital keying system which I found convenient and novel.

Could have used more convenient window/balcony door drapes, and some lighter paint colors.

I arrived at 8:35 PM in Chama at a different hotel that I had booked through Booking.com. The confirmation email said that I could check in between 3 PM and 9 PM. That was not the case as the office closed at 8PM and I got a recording advising me to call back during business hours, when I called the hotel’s number. I was very fortunate that Sterling and Sage had a vacancy when I tried to book it. Once I got the booking made, I drove the short distance to the property. They have a keyless entry system that I wasn’t aware of, but one phone call got me a gentleman on the phone who was able to talk me into getting into the building and into my room. The room was very nicely appointed with a southwestern motif. The bed was big and comfortable, and all the facilities met or exceeded my expectations. The best part was that my room, the Cumbres Room, had a balcony that looked out on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway Station and yard. I was riding he train the next day and that was the reason I was in Chama. I highly recommend this property. It doesn’t have a pool or gym or other amenities like that but I never use those anyway. There is no breakfast but there is a great little place called “My Mom and Dad's Restaurant” right nearby by and they serve an excellent Huevos Rancheros. BTW, everyone I told of my ordeal said that Sterling and Sage was a much better place to stay than the other place anyway. I would recommend it for anyone visiting the Cumbres & Toltec railroad. The room I stayed in had a single king sized bed. I don’t know if they have other rooms that can accommodate a family. I “fly solo”.
