I almost hesitate to give this a five-star review, because I don’t want the secret to get out – this is the best place to stay in Houghton! Our son is a student at MTU, so we are in the area numerous times a year. We have stayed at various other properties (both Airbnb’s and other hotels), but Independence Stay has become our go-to spot. The property is always immaculately clean, modern, and well-maintained. The staff is friendly. The rooms are comfortable, with just enough kitchen supplies to prepare simple meals.
One thing to note ahead of time is that there is no elevator, so if you are on the second floor, you will need to take the stairs. Obviously not a deal-breaker for us, so we’ll be back the next time we’re in Houghton.

We have stayed here numerous times. It is pet friendly, which is nice when we bring our furry friend. Being pet friendly and seeing other dogs at the hotel, it is still a quiet hotel. I never heard another dog. The rooms were clean and modern, the staff, friendly and helpful, and the price is right. We will be back again.

Very impressed with the entire property. It was just what we needed for the night. A very clean and spacious room. While it may lack an entire lobby for meeting, breakfast etc...it makes up for it in value and service. Front desk gal was very nice and effecient.
