    I wanted to go into the highland to see stars. I didn't expect that I would see snow too. This traditional onsen hotel is a beautiful retreat surrounded by the primeval Japanese beech forests of Hakkoda situated at an altitude of 880 meters above sea level. The wooden architecture is fascinating and it has a very classic comfortable feel. There is a free shuttle bus to and fro Aomori Station. Pick up 3.30pm from Aomori station and leaves hotel at 9am. You can email the hotel to make reservation. The ride up the winding mountain road is exhilarating. The best part of this hotel is the outdoor onsen that faces a forest of beech trees on a slope covered in snow. There are sauna and indoor onsen options too and available all night. Breakfast buffet and 9 course dinner are more costly but very sumptuous. The experience of dining by a thick layer of snow outside the window with good quality food and service is worth paying for. An unexpected gem in the forest on the Hakkōda Mountain range (八甲田山), a 18-peak volcanic group in Aomori Prefecture, Japan. The hotel also has shuttle to Hakkoda Ropeway.

    Our 2 nights here was a pleasure. We took the public bus to Prise Gorge and Towada Lake. Beautiful scenery. Breakfast and dinner were excellent. Our room onsen was small. The pillow was hard.

    Not recommended to drive there at night as the roads are quite dark and windy. Lookout for deers too. But they have a huge hiba onsen in the room. They have no lift. So bring small luggage is most ideal. Value for money as it comes with breakfast.

    Mizuumi-go bus from Aomori stops here. Hotel provides free shuttle 2-way but timings are bad. Late pick-up and early departure. So we ended up taking our own transport. Bear bells can be loan at reception. Rooms lightings are dim and very crammed toilets even for Asian size. 2-storey building without lifts and onsen is at basement. Rooms are infested with harmless bugs which hotel will provide masking tape to kill it. It didn’t bother us but it’s quite irritating. Food quality is good. Breakfast buffet style and set dinner. We felt that dinner was served at high speed as if rushing us to eat quickly and leave. For such a high room rate, we expect better. Free shuttle to/from ropeway. Free use of washing machine/dryer/laundry is appreciated. 3 massage chairs available in basement. Onsen facilities were good. Indoor/outdoor/sauna room and cold bath for guests only, no day users.
