The Crown And Cushion

Loved staying at The Crown and Cushion, really a highlight of my 10-day UK trip. Delicious food (and hot breakfast with the room), excellent location (can walk to the castle in only a few minutes), warm vibe. Keen to come back.

I made the mistake of booking this hotel after landing late in the evening at Heathrow. I sent a message saying I was arriving late and called the hotel from the airport. There was no response. When we arrived by taxi the hotel was empty - this is the first time this has ever happened to me in my life! Fortunately, the hotel next door (The George) had a room and the staff there were very helpful. The next morning I got up early and went to see if any staff were there. One staff was there and explained that the place was a pub with two rooms above and that the previous night the reception closed at 8. I hadn't released this was the case as usually receptions stay open, especially if a guest is arriving late. There was no apology and I felt the staff member was quite offhand. He said he would grant a refund for the evening but this has never materialised because Agoda and myself were unable to get in touch with the hotel. I called the phone numbers given repeatedly and also emailed the place having taken pictures of the empty hotel the night before I had the phone numbers and emails from my pictures. The email was also ignored. This hotel needs to show more consideration for its guests and it needs to answer phones and respond to emails. I'm sure the room would have been fine had anyone been there to let me in. Terrible service.

Nice staff services. Nearly new renovated room with clean toilet. Room charges include very delicious English breakfast with free refills of drinks, milk/soy milk, cornflakes, toasted breads, yogurts and fruits.

We stayed at the Crown and Cushion for three nights, attracted by the idea of experiencing a traditional old English pub in the heart of Eton. The location is excellent, close to the river and Windsor, and the building certainly has plenty of character. Unfortunately, the accommodation itself was very disappointing. We stayed in Room 3, which was tired, musty and poorly cleaned. The carpet was old and stained, and we even found what appeared to be a rodent dropping on the floor, which I accidentally stepped on and transferred onto the bed. The room and bed were also on a considerable slope. While we appreciate this is a very old building, the overall condition and cleanliness were well below what we would reasonably expect. Being directly above the bar also meant some noise at times. The included cooked breakfast was average at best. The cutlery was frequently dirty, sometimes with food residue still attached. The mushrooms appeared old and shrivelled, the coffee was poor, and basic items such as bread, butter and jam often had to be requested rather than being readily available. On the positive side, the staff were generally friendly and helpful, and the pub itself has an appealing traditional atmosphere in a wonderful location. We genuinely wanted to enjoy our stay, but the poor standard of cleanliness, tired accommodation and disappointing breakfast overshadowed the positives. We feel there would be better value elsewhere in the area. Unfortunately, we would not recommend staying here.
