    I usually avoid large chain hotels so I was pleasantly surprised by this Best Western offering. To put it simply, the place has some soul. It has been renovated and modernized but looks like it was once a fancy central hotel and still retains some of that charm. It is conveniently located in Saumur's central island, just a short walk over the bridge to the city's core one way or to the train station the other way. There is bike storage for those touring the Loire Valley on two wheels. The staff is warm and friendly. However, if I have one small criticism is that when we asked for a recommendation on where to dine we were quickly directed across the river to the more touristy area of Saumur. Ordinarily that would be understandable, but right next to the hotel we stumbled upon probably the best restaurant in France: Le Bouche à Oreille. I wish the staff had of mentioned this wonderful place, but perhaps they were trying to keep this gem their secret.
