Hotel is a historical building and a little old but the location is excellent and walking distance to the train and ferry service. Quiet area by the river

I strongly advise anyone considering Aiqun Hotel (爱群酒店) in Guangzhou to think twice before booking. Our experience was absolutely dreadful, and the hotel’s condition was far worse than we could have imagined based on the positive online reviews. The moment we entered the hotel lobby, we were greeted by an unpleasant, musty, mold-like smell. Unfortunately, it only became worse inside the elevator and on the 11th floor, where we were assigned a room. The hallway carpets were filthy and smelled terrible. Inside our room, the situation was even worse. There was a strong combination of musty odors and cigarette smoke, despite the front desk insisting that it was a non-smoking room. The room was gloomy, poorly maintained, and appeared badly outdated. Even the layout was bizarre—the television faced the entrance door rather than the area where guests would normally watch it. Our biggest concern was the potential health risk associated with the persistent mold-like smell. We found the room so unpleasant that we did not consider it suitable for an overnight stay. When we raised our concerns with the front desk, an employee named Moonlight told us that nothing could be done other than recording our complaint. There was no meaningful attempt to resolve the situation. We had booked two nights through Expedia and Agoda, and we were shocked by the enormous difference between the hotel’s online reviews and the reality we experienced. We genuinely question how this property received so many positive ratings. My advice: Do not be misled by the hotel’s historic appearance, convenient location, or glowing online reviews. A hotel must provide a clean, comfortable, and reasonably healthy environment, and Aiqun Hotel failed to meet even these basic expectations during our visit. We would never stay here again. I am sharing this review to warn other travellers so they can avoid the same disappointing experience. Stay elsewhere. Your comfort, health, and peace of mind are worth far more than any savings this hotel might offer.
