Maura's Retreat

This is a comfortable little flat in the town of Montepulciano Stazione, which btw is different to the town of Montepulciano. (Check Google Maps before you go.) It has everything you need for a pleasant stay. It's also slightly below street level, which means it's a bit cooler than most buildings during the hot summer months. Although the host can't speak English, if you have questions which she can't answer she will put you directly in touch with other English-speaking family members, and they will answer your questions over the phone. In an area which is quite overpriced in general, this place offers good value for money. It's also quite nearby some beauty spots like Castiglione del Lago, which is definitely worth a visit. If you stay here, just be sure that you understand how the front door closes, so you don't lock yourself out. It has an unusual system which takes a bit of getting used to. But once you've got it, it's no problem.

The town of Montepulciano Stazione itself is not great. There's one tiny supermarket (more like a corner shop) which opens at quirky hours, and one pizza place with good food but terrible service. And that's about it. If you're travelling by car, obviously this won't be an issue - you can go to Acquaviva (about 4kms), Montepulciano (6-7kms) or Chiusi (the local rail hub, about 15kms away) to eat and shop. But if you're using public transport, be aware that you'll have to be organised. You can certainly get to M. Stazione by train, but if you don't check timetables, you might end up standing on Chiusi station for hours. Also, I would like a fan in the apartment. The Italian summer is VERY HOT!
