It was all good

The cottage was beautiful, comfortable, very well-equipped, and in a great position in a narrow back street in the ancient centre of Hay on Wye. The back yard was lovely and quiet, though full of birdsong and flowers as well as sufficient garden furniture. (We went in early July). We were careful to water the plants (which was a relaxing pleasure) in the evening as there was a heatwave. The old, thick stone walls of the cottage are amazingly effective at keeping the house cool, especially downstairs, and we did the widely- recommended actions to stop the heat getting in - shutting outside doors, windows and curtains/blinds when it got hot, then open them in the evening and night (and early morning) as the air cooled, to get a breeze through the house. I expect that the good insulating properties of the cottage would also keep it warm in winter. When the front bedroom was still very warm in the first part of the night, I slept downstairs on the lovely sofa, then went upstairs once it had cooled. There were some electric "tower" fans that we could have used upstairs (though the back bedroom where my friend slept was not as warm) but we didn't spot them in the side part of the wardrobe until we were packing to go home! Hay is a beautiful old market town with a fascinating, dense, layout, lovely old architecture and a very domestic-looking castle right in the centre! It has enough food shops, a great deli, and lots of interesting shops besides the many book shops that it's famous for. We didn't use the car at all except when going out for the gardens trip (see below). We were well entertained by walking around the town for most of the few days we were there, and we enjoyed the cafes in the day. However the extreme heat kept us indoors each afternoon - this is a very comfortable cottage to have to stay indoors!. We got good takeaways from Red Indigo (Indian food) and the fish and chip shop.

I received so many emails that didn’t seem to offer much information, but I somehow overlooked the one explaining how to access parking. As the street itself was a tiny cul de sac, with parked cars, it was rather stressful unloading luggage initially and I parked in the town car park, not realizing there was an allocated place much closer to the cottage. Having to reset the heating regularly was annoying and actually the cottage was a little cold. It would have been nice to have had a way of increasing the heat.
