Amajambere Iwacu Community Camp

My 3rd stay and 4th time eating at Amajambere and it was as lovely as ever. Clemensia is amazing—lovely and friendly and efficient and organised and helpful and informative . Everything is possible if you ask her!! Nothing is too much trouble. Robert the chef cooks enormous delicious meals for dinner and breakfast—I did not need lunch, but packed lunches are available as well. Bernard is an excellent boda boda driver and took me to the start of my gorilla trek and Mehavura hike and collected me on time without having to wait. He also took me on to Rushaga at the end of my stay and stopped in Kisoro for me to use the ATM and buy supplies at the supermarket. (He went to meet me at the border at Cyanika but due to my delays had to leave after waiting 2 hours for me) I was in the dormitory which I found very comfortable and appreciated the power socket, and the hot shower and the flushing toilet are only a short walk away through the lovely garden. I really enjoyed relaxing in the garden and seeing all of the bird life there. The open fire in the dining room at night is a lovely feature. For Golden Monkey and Gahinga volcano and Sabinyo hikes the location is perfect- less than 5 minutes from the starting point at the Welcome Centre. On three different days I saw golden monkey in the trees between Amajambere and the Welcome Centre!!

De perfecte locatie, want het is 50 meter lopen naar de ingang van Mgahinga NP. Als je daar 's morgens in alle vroegte moet zijn, dan wil je niet in het donker een uur over de hobbelweg vanaf Kisoro rijden. Je kunt beter hier logeren. Wel handig om te weten: kies de omweg en niet de rechtstreekse weg zoals Google Maps adviseert. De rechtstreekse weg is verschrikkelijk slecht, de slechtste van heel Oeganda. Het is een eenvoudige accommodatie, maar heel schoon. En Clemensia, de beheerder, is erg aardig en spreekt goed Engels. Zij regelt bijvoorbeeld de golden monkey excursie voor je (aanrader!). Belangrijk: vergeet je mondkapje niet, want anders mag je niet mee. Gamashen en een dun regenjack of cape zijn ook aan te bevelen. De gamashen zijn eventueel te huur bij Clemensia. Zij verzorgt samen met de kok eenvoudige maaltijden en ze houdt van spelletjes. Je natte kleren kun je drogen bij het vuur. Het kan er koud zijn (begin juni daalde het kwik naar 7 graden 's nachts en kregen we zelfs een kruik mee naar bed). Het is een community lodge, wat betekent dat je de lokale gemeenschap steunt als je deze accommodatie boekt. Daardoor kunnen arme kinderen bijvoorbeeld naar school. Clemensia organiseert ook een wandeling van een paar uur en dan ga je op bezoek bij het Batwa-dorpje (hiermee steun je hen eveneens) en heb je onderweg prachtig zicht op de vulkanen. Wil je meer weten over de Batwa, dan kun je de duurdere Batwa-tour doen die je bij het bezoekerscentrum van het Nationaal Park kunt boeken. Dat hoeft in beide gevallen slechts een dag van tevoren.

Handig om te weten: af en toe valt de stroom uit (dus neem een powerbank en een zaklamp mee). Verwacht geen luxe.

The staff was super helpful and the camp is located right at the gate of the park, which is perfect if you want to go for Sabynio hike. The food is decent and they can prepare packed lunch. Everything is super simple, don't expect any luxury at all.

Shared bathrooms and showers are not very nice. Dirty, no flush, no hot water.

Clementia was extremely warm and welcoming. She even arranged a local guide for us to do bird watching on the evening. The room was large and comfortable. The camping area looked grassy and smooth! The food was amazing. There was a fire pit in the dining room during the evening. The facility is situated right before the entrance of the park.
