About this house rental

Comfortable & family-friendly, this 4 bed/3 bath, well-equipped home offers access to the wonders of the ocean tides with the luxury of a heated pool, sunny deck and cozy indoor spaces to relax and recharge.

Originally built in 1900, the Flying Jib was moved to a new foundation and underwent renovations in 1991. It now boasts 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, large, comfortable living spaces, and a fully equipped kitchen.

The cottage is equipped with games, books, and puzzles, internet access, televisions that allow for streaming content as well as viewing of dvd's.

The property allows for direct access to Herrick's Bay, to the west and what may be the most beautiful walk and views of Blue Hill and Jericho Bays to the east and south. High tide completely covers the rocky shore, and low tide allows for exploration of the wondrous sea creatures that live beneath. Live sand dollars, sea stars, anemones, a myriad of crabs and sea urchins can be observed along sandbars that become walking paths at very low tides that give access to the off-shore islands.

We only rent by the week between June-September (Saturday to Saturday). We can be somewhat more flexible in the shoulder season.

We had a wonderful time at They Flying Jib. The house is historic and has the charm of a home built long ago. It was clean and Kate was a great host, easy to reach and share any good places to go. It is between an hour and 15-30 minutes to get to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, depending on traffic, but it is near small little areas like Deer Isle and Brooklin is a quaint place, as well. We enjoyed our stay and recommend it.

The “Flying Jib” was perfect for our family vacation. My 4 daughters and families came from all over the country to stay together in Maine. The house was big enough for 8 adults, two children, and one baby. I have never seen a VRBO kitchen this well stocked with dinner ware, pots and pans, and pretty much any gadget you might need. There was even a stock of spices. We managed to hit Maine during an uncharacteristically hot week. It got up to 85 and 90 which is pretty rare for June and being at the coast. There is no AC but plenty of box fans to keep the air moving and bring in the cooler air in at night. The pool was amazing and we made great use out of it. The pool needed to be vacuumed but was otherwise nice. The ocean was a short walk away and the kids had fun searching tide pools for creatures. There is a lot to do around the area as well. Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor are 1.5 hrs away giving us lots of options for hikes, shopping, and sight seeing. You can also get a variety of whale watches and fishing tours but beware you need to book these before you go because, as we found out, trying to find one while we were there was not happening. I also really liked Deer Isle. It’s a nice short pretty drive. Stonington is quant little town with some shops and restaurants. We ate at 27 Fathoms while there. I would recommend this property and would love to go back in the future.
