About this house rental
There's nothing like relaxing on the porch swing at this quaint 2-bedroom cottage in Sugar Grove, Virginia, (near Wytheville) listening to the stream rush over the rocks. Watch our resident ducks, and then take a dip in the private swimming hole. Kids (and kids at heart) love the caboose in the yard, complete with it's own half bath. There's a big lawn for playing, great hikes nearby, plenty of fly fishing in the area, and the cottage is in walking distance to the beautiful Grayson Highlands Horse trail. Good WiFi, Direct TV (or bring your own Fire Stick), and cell phones will work if you connect them through the WiFi. The kitchen has everything you need, and a washer and dryer are available. Great spot for hunters, or for anyone that just wants to get away for a while. Borders Jefferson National forest.

A fun house to stay in. The caboose, fishing bridge and stream were a very nice addition. Very quiet location. Along the road into the Mt Rogers Rec Area, so easy to hike or drive up into the Rec Area.We made day trips to Grayson Highlands, Sparta and Marion.Would stay again.

Beautiful property and location, but there were several serious safety concerns. This was a winter stay and the property was heated by a ventless gas fireplace in the living/dining room area that had been rigged up with a battery and small AC charger using alligator clips and jumpers. Another AC cord for the fireplace fan was looped around the back with a makeshift heatshield made out of aluminum foil. There was no carbon monoxide (CO) detector in the house, which is necessary for ventless gas heating appliances. The bedrooms were heated with space heaters. There were no smoke detectors in any room, which we expected to have been remedied based on previous comments about the property. The oven also required extensive cleaning with tons of gunk on the bottom.I almost called the host and demanded a refund, but it was late in the evening when I noticed the issues and we didn't have another place to go. I instead made the hour long round-trip back to town to purchase smoke and carbon monoxide detectors (100) while my wife cleaned the oven the best she could. We hoped for the best.Fortunately there were no issues. We took the detectors we purchased when we left and will reuse them. But this all brings up some serious questions about guest safety and legal liabilities that need to be addressed throughout the vacation rental industry.
