The Old Coastguard House

The property was in a great location. Right on the sea front and a short walk from the shops and restaurants. Plenty of space for everyone and there was everything you’d need in there. Any questions we asked were really quickly responded to and it was great to have parking permits for 2 cars. We didn’t struggle any day to get parked up on one of the neighbouring streets.

The property could do with a deep clean. It didn’t look like the sofa’s had been pulled out for a long time. It would be nice to have more than the 1 set of keys as it was difficult to get the keys to fit in the lock box. Upstairs has very large Victorian windows that open right up. There’s wasn’t anything to stop them opening the full way and also no quad to stop anyone falling out and so this made me too nervous to open them at all with the kids. It would have been nice to be able to do this in the hot weather.

The connection to WiFi was amazing...so easy. The towels were obviously quite new and amazing quality. The house is very spacious.

It was a bit tired in places. The garden furniture is pretty dilapidated and needs replacing. The utility room was pretty dirty in places. For the top dollar money you are paying, you would expect everything to be exceptional.

Lovely house in a fantastic location, but unfortunately let down by cleanliness We really wanted to love this property because it is a lovely house in a fantastic location and has so much potential. The bedrooms are all a great size with plenty of storage, and having two kitchens and two lounges was fantastic for our stay. The upstairs lounge in particular has a beautiful view, and the off-street parking was easy to find and very convenient.

Unfortunately, the cleanliness of the property really brought the whole stay down. The house was very dirty and appeared to have been in need of a thorough deep clean for quite some time. There was thick black dust along the skirting boards, the toilets and bathrooms were dirty, and there were thick cobwebs throughout. The bed linen and towels also had a stale smell, as though they had been washed but not dried promptly. The kitchen was particularly disappointing, with a filthy chopping board, dirty crockery and very dirty shelves. We also found tins of food that were two or three years out of date, which was concerning. Outside, the garden furniture was very run down and desperately needed painting, and there was a lot of bird mess. Inside, there were also areas of flaking paint in the corners of several rooms, with pieces of paint left on the floor rather than being hoovered up. The host was responsive when we raised our concerns and kindly refunded the cleaning fee and offered to have the property cleaned again the following day. We appreciated the gesture, but as we were leaving the day after that, we declined. Unfortunately, given the overall condition, we also felt that a standard clean the following day would not have addressed what appeared to be a much deeper cleaning issue. It is genuinely a shame because this could be a beautiful and really enjoyable property. The location, size and layout are excellent, but the level of cleanliness was far below what we would expect, particularly considering the price of the stay. With a proper deep clean and some attention to the upkeep of the property, this could be a fantastic place to stay. Sadly, in its current condition, we found it very disappointing.
